Title: Filter Media
Post by: Krumpet on July 16, 2006, 02:46:29 PM
Hey team.

Just aquired a via aqua 750 (aqua one cf-1200) and was wondering what media to put in it. It has a these little blue square looking ceramic squares in it at the moment and some bio balls but i really want to make sure it works the best that it can. So what is the best combo of media? Do the filter media's   vary in effectiveness and quality from brand to brand? Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Krumpet

Try seachem matrix mate it is top notch stuff & is readily available from sponsors of this forum. A litre of this stuff goes a long way & I believe that it is a much more efficient biological filter medium than bio balls as it has a greater surface area for the beneficial de-nitrifing bacteria to colonise.
Just my 2 cents worth.

To give you an Idea of how good Matrix works, I'm running it on my 3000L System,  fish are breeding and growing like crazy.  I only do minimal water changes (about 500l a week).  All this on just 4L of pond matrix

Baa Baa  Translation, I use matrix too.

Cheaper option is use the rough/more porous type of ceramic noodles.

Yep, pourous ceramic rings go good in external canisters. Grab a bag of them if you see them in a shop.

I've used the Sera brand ceramic noodles. Apparently there a couple of different grades in the Sera range. I'm using their best one, and its fantastic. I've got 3 bags of noodles in my CF-2400 as well as assorted pads, and it does a great job of keeping the water levels stable.
