Title: Going on holidays????
Post by: davo0903 on July 18, 2006, 07:24:50 PM
Ok, being still pretty new to the hobby, I've just come up against a problem. Next year, we're going away for around 3 weeks.

Thats a long time between feeds!!!!

I've 3 tanks of fish which need feeding in that time. So, what do you guys do? Is there anything you can do?!?! I have a friend who wouldn't mind coming in every so often, but I can't ask him to come in every day. Any ideas??

even automatic feeders will only hold so much food, probably not enough for 3 weeks.

unfortunately you just may need to have someone come over everyday!
you could probably get away with feeding them every second day?
i mean, holding females can go weeks without dying, so I think they'll hold out for a couple of days between feeds.
i doubt also feeder blocks will be of any use.
good luck with it

I'd also be concerned about needing a water change in that 3 weeks. If you've got mature fish i reckon you could easily get away with feeding them every second day. I know we have previously let ours go 1 week without any food at all.

In my 300Ltr display tank I feed my fish once every second day and do a water change once a month (unless its desparately needed), and I just top up evaped water in between changes to keep it full.
I have been doing it like this for a long time with next to no problems compared to when I was doing weekly water changes and feeding twice a day.Oh and its well stocked too.:)
I dont think I could trust a auto feeder gadget......
Just get someone to come around once every 3 days and they will be fine.
If you are raising fry its a different story

i agree with ashh
i redularly go away for 3 and 4 day weekends, my fish have always been fine ,
for a three week absence i suggest a water change before you go and get somone to feed every three days as ashh said
with a lower food intake you shouldnt need a water change till you return,
