hi all,
firefins have spawned for the 2nd time.
1st time well was nothing short of a nightmare.
in the end after they hatched all died or got eaten.
whats the best thing to do.?
as soon as they hatch should i remove them
to a fry net or something in the tank.
any help is welcome. :?
cheers dave.
What have they bred in?
When the fry were eaten last time, at what stage was it? eg; was it by the mother while the fry were still in their cave or was when the fry left the safety of the cave?
I usually leave the fry with the parents for about 10 days. I pull the cave out & place in a seperate tank{same water as main tank} Try to grab out without taking the female with it.
Frenchy :D
hi frenchy,
they have breed in a b/nose log this time aswell as the last.
they were eaten in the log at around 4-5 days after they hatched.
tried to get them out the last time, but the female jams herself in,
and wont come out.
she blocks it off so the fry dont come out either.
cheers dave.
hmm now that is a bit of a problem, with the female.
Can the male fit in there too? If not then I would give the female another go & see what happens.
If they get eaten again then next time remove cave & mum to a tank of there own & see if she cares for them for a while in knowing there are no hassles, male other tank mates... I always remove fry when I think the fry will start to leave to cave. The fry go through stages, egg, to newly hatched with egg sack, to all huddled together in the back of cave as one mass, once you notice that they are starting to move around a bit that is the first sign that within 2 days they will venture out.
I am a big fan of barnacle shells as its easy to see what is going on & I don't have to disrupt the mum at all. So when its time I appoach the tank, see thinks food, leaves the entrance way enough for me to shoot my hand inbetween her & the cave, can be hard yes I know.
I have had this happen a few times with first time mum alto's, as in eating fry. Once alto's form a pair/trio... start to breed & get along then its a case of something going wrong that will stop them breedng. So don't worry to much, fingers crossed.
Good luck, hope all goes well, keep us posted.
