We're moving next week and was hoping to get some seasoned advice as we've accumulated our tanks whilst living where we are now and have never had to move so many fish.
So here's all the specs, we're moving only 5 mins drive away (Chevron Island to Surfers Paradise), We have a 6ft, 4ft and 5 x 2ft tanks. My issue is my partner wants to move them all at once at the same time as the removalists are taking the furniture out so that we can pop the empty tanks on the same truck and we don't have to pick them up! I think he's being too ambitious and we'll have casualties as a result....
I think we should try and move the 4ft the day before (Thurs or Friday-he's working all day so this is why he's off the idea cos it would be an afternoon thing) and then put as many of the fish in it when it's already setup in the new place. We can use the 2fts to store the fish from the 4ft whilst we move the tank and then move them all over using supercheap boxes. I guess then it would be good to move the 2fts after all that. Then the next day (Sat) put all the fish from 6ft in boxes and get their tank on the truck and then ferry them over to the new place......
I think we have about 90 fish and then heaps of juv BN and Yellows...arghhh...its a nightmare just thinking about it!
Thanks in advance
:)
Hi mate ya moving fish can be night mair
The best way to move fish is in plastic boxers with and small spong filter driven by air and they must have lids but that short distace foam boxers would be fine
But wash them well tho
and i think you should move the tanks first and set them up at the new house
When i moved i had 6 tanks to move i just moved the fish in foam boxers I air rated them at home while I was moving the tanks
It took hours just to drain and strip the tanks
I got the tanks here
filled the tanks added the cems and that went and got the fish
So the tanks only ran about 45 minets of so til i got the fish back here
It was 3am so
I just put the fish in and with a ton of luck didn't loose 1 fish
So thats how i did my move i hop its smoother for you
good luck
Andrew
I dont know about moving so many fish but I would be weary about letting the removalist move your tanks. Everyone I've ever spoken too says move your own tanks, you are far more careful than someone else, what if something in the truck moves and smashes a tank, or worse still another person drops it/moves it the wrong way.
All the best of luck, I hope everyone survives the move!!!!!!!!!!
we'll be the annoying people supervising the removal and we can help as much as we want so hoping that the combination of the two will suffice :?
we actually just got rid of about 85 fish to the local aquarium so I may have underestimated how may we actually have lol. They were just the baby yellows, extra convicts that had survived and BN's - so still have the large guys to transfer
thanks for the advice
I'd check with the removalists.
Some don't/won't move fish tanks. Too much liability and a mess if something happens.
You'd be hiring/borrowing a ute and doing it yourself
whenever I've moved tanks I take heaps of buckets & eskies just to transport the old water from the tanks.I think it's a bit less stress on the fish if you can do that & add less new water.Hth.
Cheers Brian.
Your idea of moving tanks over multiple days is the best way. Looks like the poor partner will have to do as he's told
Try & get rid of as many of the smaller fish as you can, if they are big enough to sell. Smaller fish don't handle shifts as good as bigger fish.
Check with your removalist as mentioned. Some don't like tanks. Make sure they is plenty of foam....under the tanks. Keep your filters, media in tank water, buckets... The storage containers from the cheap shops are good for moves. Or ask a lfs if you they have any spare foam boxes.
Good luck
Frenchy :D
Ive just had to do the move (14 tanks) too, and yes it is a nightmare!!!
As Justin said, spreading it over a few days is by far the best and easiest option. Less streesful for you and you fish.
I'd move the bigger tanks first and once they are set up, shift as many of your fish as possible into them before moving the rest of your tanks.
I bought some 90L black plastic bins from Bunnings for $9 each to transport the fish. They are strong and have handles. They can be filled 2/3 and still be carried without them breaking. Because they are black, the fish don't get spooked.
