Checked out a new shop open here onthe sunshine coast lovely clean tanks but do they know what they are doing. Well if you put blue rams in with brichardi what do you think I had to say somethng and was nice about (unusual for me) but did they listen ha ha ha. Nah of course not after all they are the shop you are just a nosy person so I wlaked even though their prices were good on certain things I don't think I will be buying fish from there or even selling them fish. Seems to be the attitude of shops up here they seem to know everything but in reality well lets not get too nasty shall we. This is the reason I would rather travel to get my fish.
dont feel too special mate... :D
there are shops like that everywhere, even here in the greatest place to live in australia...lol
i agree that traveling and getting quality fish from private breeders and more reputable outlets is the way to go.
But did they feed the mix of fish in the tank braddo? .... there is one particular shop here - and I am sure you know which one I mean ... that does not feed their fish ... or so it seems.
All their fish have sunken bellies - and some fish I sold them at 4cm were still that size some 2 months later when my fish from the same batch had doubled in size.
I wanted to get a net - take my fish - and give them their money back.
They should be reported to RSPCA.
Regards
So you just walked into a shop and told them their fish were wrong? Not to be rude, but I ignore people like you until I know I can trust them.
Any random can have an opinion, and most of the people I dealt with were telling me they had oscars and tetras and they are fine because they live together in the wild. Or something similar.
Two sides to every story...
James
Braddo didn't say what he said, just that he said something and was nice about it.
It doesn't take a genius to know that Rams would get annihilated by Birchardi.
So you're saying that you'd ignore any advice given to you by a customer? If it sounded reasonable and you didn't know for sure, wouldn't it be sensible to check it out on the net or a book or something?
Not being rude, but I think Braddo is saying he walks out of shops and never returns because of staff like you.
I would have to agree .... if a person sets themselves up as a retailer, I would expect them to know about the product they are selling ... and if by some chance a mistake had been made in housing tankmates together, should welcome helpful advice.
Cheers to braddo - I hope he lets me know which shop it is - and I will certainly avoid it too.
Regards
Nah James I said straight to him exact words" would you mind if I give you a bit of advice" he said yes" I said " YOu shouldn't keep brichardi and rams together because when the brichardi start to pair up they will kill the rams, and they also require diferent water conditions as one is from the amazon of low ph the other from lake tanganyika with a high ph." By the way mate what shop do work in and what do you breed cause if you let me know I will never buy of you or the shop. Even you would have to say the advice I gave was more than accurate and nothing stupid like the oscar incident. By the way mate I have been breeding all sorts of fish for 30 years so my experience should count for something.
Carole lets just say it is in wises rd marroochy.
Oh by the way James if you can't take advice and research it you are in the wrong hobby.
Because it is attitudes like yours that give me the shites. ANd more times than not I am asked by shops that no me to help there customers.
Actually braddo ... it was not that one ... ummmm somewhere very close to the Bruce Highway - if you email me - I will tell you which one.
I know the one you mean carole but the wises road one was the one I checked out on the weekend.
Anakist did have a point. Anyone who has worked in a lfs can tell ya how many times you get advice off customers. But then again I was always taught to listen & see if there is any truth in the comment first.
I am not defending the shop either, I have tried very nicely in shops a couple of times to give advice but to give you an example. It is like here when someone asks a question. Sometimes the answer isn't what they wanted to hear.
As for the mix of fish chances are the water in the shop is all the same ph anyway & if the fish are all small, hopefully they are all sold before the brichardi pair up.
Frenchy :D
Nah mate disagree frenchy james don't know me from a bar of soap so I ain't goona take people like you comments. The shops has only been open a week and has someone I know that fdon't know sqaut about fish in charge. I agree there are a lot of knobs in this game that think they are experts but I ain't one in this case I was more worried about the fish than the shop. My point is someone walks into that shop sees them together in the same tank takes em home sets them up the same and then get peed off with the hobby because of it. Unfrotunately there are people new too the hobby and mimic the shops. By the way I ran an aquarium maintenance business here on the sunny coast for 6 years and was constantly on the phone to people doiong something a shop had told them and wondered why this fish was killing that fish.
I have been called out at all times day and night to fix problems caused by wrong advice or mimicing the shops.
I think you mis read my post. Your comments did prove exactly what James & I meant though.
Frenchy :D
My comments did not prove nothing if anything they are telling it straight that there are a few shops out there that are providing wrong information for 2 reasons either they don't know or to make money. obviously you have never lived up this way. Mate this was supposed to be a post about attitude of staff towards customers especially staff that don't care or know what they are doing. Straight up would you keep rams with brichardi ? No I don't think so . The only thing I am sorry for is caring too much about my hobby and my passion that I have spent time in learning and studying and experiencing to make a valid comment. To be honest this is the first time I have ever commented to a shop about something they are doing wrong ussually I say nothing and walk out but I felt as this being a new shop they needed some idea in why they shouldn't go together as I would hate to seem them get a bad name for something they didn't realise was wrong.
The only reason I got peed at james was he didn't even have the nuts to ask what my exact comments were but had the ordasity to call me rude for trying to do something I felt was right. And I am the type of person to have my facts straight and know what I am tallking about before I offer advice. As those that know me and talk to me will tell you. I don't claim to be an expert but I do claim to have experience. But if you want to have a go at me for that I will remember and when that day comes around that you want help with something and I have the answer that may get you out of strife with it then I will have one thing to say and that is BAD LUCK>Enough said by me on this topic which obviously in you and james eyes was wrong but I want people to succeed in this hobby and not waste their money and give it away as a bad joke.
[quote:8a3d3afffe="here fishie fishie"]I think you mis read my post. Your comments did prove exactly what James & I meant though.
Frenchy :D[/quote:8a3d3afffe]
How did it prove that? I don't understand either?
Well I wasn't having ago. Firstly I was saying that I have tried to do what you did yourself. I don't know how the shop is set up or the owner in question, so I stated a couple of possibilities of why people don't listen. If you really do care then maybe if you keep popping in, being nice & polite & become a regular face the owner may even approach you to bounce ideas.
[quote:5a3cc337a5]But then again I was always taught to listen & see if there is any truth in the comment first. [/quote:5a3cc337a5] Means that, I used to listen to customers when they came in as they might of seen something that I have missed. But hey I can accept criticism. Joys of being a kiwi I guess.
As for my last post. Just to explain it to those that didn't get it, sorry. I did run it past 3 others for a reality check first.
James said this
[quote:5a3cc337a5]So you just walked into a shop and told them their fish were wrong? Not to be rude, but I ignore people like you until I know I can trust them. Any random can have an opinion, and most of the people [/quote:5a3cc337a5] You see I get what James meant. The shop owner dosen't know you from a bar of soap, plain in simple, it wasn't rude.
Now I said this
[quote:5a3cc337a5]I am not defending the shop either, I have tried very nicely in shops a couple of times to give advice but to give you an example. It is like here when someone asks a question. Sometimes the answer isn't what they wanted to hear. [/quote:5a3cc337a5] As in the shop owner dosen't know ya from a bar of soap; you could be any Tom, Dick or Harry. This new shop is his pride & joy I would guess. You are telling him something he might not be prepared to hear. Try my first suggestion at start of this post if you really do care about the hobby, especially if everything else in the shop looked nice.
I have done it before myself a few times with my locals. I have even got a few friends out of it & get good deals too.
So when Braddo posted this,
[quote:5a3cc337a5]Nah mate disagree frenchy james don't know me from a bar of soap so I ain't goona take people like you comments.[/quote:5a3cc337a5] Exactly, you proved me & James right. Well to me came across as a hypocrite. You can't see where I was coming from as of your negative attitude.
As for the shop owner, I don't know? Maybe for him it was his Pride, Ignorance, or just a simple case of he didn't know you from a bar of soap, so what would you know. If he was worked in lfs before you are probably person #1278 with a comment about you shouldn't do this or that. So that again leads me to the start of the post.
As for this;
[quote:5a3cc337a5]But if you want to have a go at me for that I will remember and when that day comes around that you want help with something and I have the answer that may get you out of strife with it then I will have one thing to say and that is BAD LUCK>[/quote:5a3cc337a5]
Tissue Please  & as I suggested at the start, learn to read, I wasn't having a go at you.
Frenchy :D
Ok I think I might need to make a comment here, first of all, you are right to tell the shop keeper your opinion, everyone is entitled to it, and they have an obligation as a business to be nice, if they want your business.
If they told you that you are wrong and to get out, then its your right to use word of mouth to make sure people you know dont shop there, although the forum is not the place, so im happy you didnt name the business.
As a person that started out in the hobby with my brother & being sold, wait for the list, 6 x 7 bar frontosa, 3 clown loaches, 2 acei, 3 electric yellows, 4 bristlenose, 3 venustus, 3 peacocks, 3 ghost knifes, 3 tropheus dubiosi (and being told to feed them HBH Cichlid Frenzy), and probably more for a 4x18x18 tank, I can more than understand your frustration for the customer, I could have myself been put off, instead I decided to find out abit more, and here I am.
I think the shop has an obligation to know there fish, (not always the staff though, help is hard to find). So maybe you should write them a letter, to the owner. You might be surprised what you get back, they do get alot of opinions, not many would bother to spend 20 minutes and put it on paper.
I know I would take notice of a letter, an email can be a quick complaint, a letter takes effort.
I think the biggest problem facing the hobby is the respect for the fish, many shops wont sell fish for the first week or so and try to enforce into the customer that they are not just a tv with a light switch, and sometimes loose embarsed customers to other shops who will will sell everything and make a quick buck, dont know howto get around this one either.
Alot of people dont want to know it all, just enough to have a nice display, This might be one of those problems we can never fix, and just live with.
Vote with your wallet though, and keep the barstads honest!
Nice hard luck story Grummy. We all have them. Whats your point to this story?
The worst thing this shop has done is put rams with brichardi. Wow, that rates up there compared to other shops i have seen over the years, Big deal. Ask anyone who has worked in a lfs where they have had to seperate fish that normally gets along, but today dosen't. If the shop is on a system, limited tanks or all water is the same, the fish aren't killing each other, limited space.....its not that big a deal. The only problem I see is what the staff say to customers, which hasn't been mentioned at all, yet.
Frenchy :D
The point is I can see his concern for customers as I have been caught by a shop that just sold fish without having a clue what they where and what tank mates they would be good with.
Not a problem in putting those two fish togeather in the same tank when they are small, but a responce like, "Yea where just opening and abit overstocked, I wouldnt recommend that to a customer" would be normal.
And show they know what they are doing, not listening to them though because you either dont know them are just get alot of customers giving advice (why?), only proves the point you probably dont know what your doing.
And if you are getting alot of people giving advice anakist, just be nice and ask them for the scientific name so you can look it up. That will shut most of them up.
I would say the people knew what they were doing in your case. When you walked in they went ching ching $$$ What they did to you & your brother was a nasty piece of work.
Frenchy :D
meo meo cat fight.
i meant i like both sides of story both have good points
I ain't taking sides.
Grummy was ripped off big time, which was bad. The good thing, well maybe in this case, is that grummy stuck to the hobby after such miss treatment.
Frenchy :D
 to frenchy
:D to gum
I am sorry Braddo, I didn't mean to be rude!
Ask Andrew or LLoyd or anyone else I have met, they will probably say I am the king of questions and I am forever asking things when I know I can trust the source. I am sure Andrew must be sick of me by the time I leave his house!
The fact that you asked to give advice is awesome! If I did act upon all the advice I have been given (by LFS owners, friends, and customers) I would have given up the hobby many times over. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, and everybody is entitled to tell everyone else about it. Do you act upon every single piece of advice you are given?
James
Nah mate not all especially if it don't make sense but I do listen and check it out when I first started in the hobby I had an old bloke about 70 that taught me a lot and I still source these guys out for there thoughts on what the advice was Ok he is not alive anymore but I do have a couple of friends in that age bracket that have been keeping fish for 50 years or more.
I have to admit there are a lot of twacks in the game that would give you alot of wrong advice unfortunately and personally I don't like giving out a great deal of advice but in this instance it was a disaster waiting to happen.
If you think of it it wouldn't hurt to ask andrew or lloydy about who I am have had a lot of dealings with em and they are a great knowledge base between the 2 of em.
cheers mate.
Second thoughts you better not ask prolly give me a hard time LOL
 What a load of sh#t this post has been. I am sorry to say.
[quote:2a30644bd9]it was a disaster waiting to happen[/quote:2a30644bd9] Out of all the shops I have seen, that one mistake the shop made that you pointed out with all your experience suprises me in the upmost. Every shop I go to, visit or whatever, has something wrong in it worse than that. Mislabeled fish, dirty water, sick fish still being sold, neons sold with discus, dead fish in tanks....this is your first post about a shop doing something wrong{to my knowledge} & that is what you came up with. 2 cichlids mixed together that shouldn't be  What a joke. I see that all the time too.
I know what the real problem is, [b:2a30644bd9]the person didn't listen too you plain & simple.[/b:2a30644bd9] Because you know all. Didn't take a genus to figure that out either  & you really hated it too  & I ain't the only person to see it that way either, I ran this past a few others, but they are somewhat more politically correct & I like calling spades.... Sorry I just don't like posts that post up bullsh#t about shops. This would be the most trivial I have seen on this site.
As Grummy said if you really care, then wouldn't you try other means of politely questioning the shop? Instead of bagging them on a forum for something so trivial.{yawns} Especially seeing as cichlid sales in lfs from this site would be <5% of total turnover.
Frenchy :D
I really like this post: A typical SEQ shop. Poor Kevin.

Mitch
Sounds so familiar.. There is a certain shop in Noosa that is run by an arogant prick. Anyways enough from me, if anyone wants to know PM me.
Frenchy GET OVER YOURSELF did I name the shop NO So my final comment to you is LEAVE IT IT IS FINISHED. At least Anakist had some decency about hime in the but you are a typical kiwi and keep carrying on about the same bs. Mate if you think this post is a load of shit THEN STOP REPLYING TO IT DUMB ASS.
Jadels I know the exact shop you mean and it shows a pretty good example of what I was getting at with this post.
mitch mitch mitch
I call 131114 when im sad.
kev
less than 1 % frenchy
and on that note we might just put this puppy to bed......
thankyou everyone for your input.
