Title: metal halide lights suitable for freshwater plants fish!?
Post by: kj2006 on October 09, 2006, 11:17:16 AM
I am moving from salt  :( to fresh water(Aust Natives) I currently have 2 150W 14K metal halide lights over the tank 5x2x2.  Are these lights suitable for a planted tank or should I stick to floros only.

Thanks in advance.

Metal halide will be more than suitable IMO.  Note that if you have a 2' deep tank, you will have difficulty getting light down to the depths without something powerful like MHs.

If you are getting into natives, I recommend that you come along to the ANGFA Qld meeting this Friday at the Bar Jai Hall.  Lots of information and an auction (typically with lots of plants) at the end.

I had a MH on a 2 foot deep planted tank.
Did wonders for the plants. Only had it on about 10 hours a week.
Turned it on when I felt like it.
Never managed to keep nice plants until I got this light.
Well worth it for a planted tank.

Yes, they are great for the plants, if you can remove the UV filter and watch your plants thrive.
