It seems to me that there are some people on this forum, that for one reason or another(maybe they cant type or are illiterate) seem to make a habit of jumping in on other peoples wanted to buy ads.
Eg, I place and add to buy a light, then someone responds and says yes I have what you want, the hijacker comes in behind your back and says I'll take that and duds the the person placing the ad.
The same thing happens when someone places a to sell ad, people jump in and say they can supply that particular item cheaper than the person who placed the ad.
I dont know whats wrong with these people, I could say, but I wont, suffice it to say that they have a severe lack of Ettiqutte and manners.
Theo
Yep there sure are a lot of unscrupulous operators out there, and makes me mad also.
I'm a believer in Karma - what goes around, comes around, eventually someone gets there comeuppence. For example, when someone cuts in line and makes a cheaper or quicker deal, I just think to myself they've now tempted fate (and Murphy's Law), and run the risk of something bad happening by getting an advantage than if they had've waited in line.
eg. The buyer that butts on your WTB and ends up with a dodgy light that burns his house down. Or the seller thats cuts in selling his fish and wastes his Sunday waiting for the buyer that doesn't turn up.
Whatever it is they did wrong, it'll come back around to bite them on the arse sooner or later. 8)
Fish Karma
Quote from: GTR73eg. The buyer that butts on your WTB and ends up with a dodgy light that burns his house down.
IMO, I don't think this sentence is nice 8O 8O
I like the Karma idea, not sure if I would like his house to burn down, but wouldnt mind if he switches it on and burns his eybrows off. That way we would all know who it is.
Theo
I'm with you on this if you have something to sell put your own posts up don't stuff up someone elses sale because you cant be bothered. The other thing that bugs me too is when you help someone out and they know who you sell to and they try to under cut you or move in on your market. If someone has been good enough too help you then don't go stabbin them in the back and try and udercut them.
Ok, ok, maybe their house burning down was a bit extreme, but you get the idea.
Just the aquarium cabinet burns to the ground.
No just kidding, the fluro light catches fire and dumps toxic fumes into the aquarium.
No no no, that's not nice either, it blows all the house's electrical wiring. . .
Oh alright! It sparks and causes a nasty shock to the finger - HAPPY?
(geez! just tryin' to make Theo feel better!)
Yep I agree with Theos original post too.
This raises another question too, where are the moderators when this sort of thing happens? If they keep the posts clean people soon get the hint.

I think part of the problem is people email, PM or phone behind the scenes.
I must admit that the forum of late seems (to me) to be a "grumpy old mans club" all manners have gone out the window! I enjoy a good joke (particularly at avjohnnys expense) but sometimes some topics go totally off beam & offensive.
One thing the site administrator could do is to install spell check functionality? I believe it is available for free (open source) from phpBB site.

Good 2 cents worth Cary.
My major problem is that alot of the experienced Cichlid keepers, breeders....don't share their knowledge any more. Only posting in the Trader or Breeders section, the only time some reply to posts is when a possible sale is up for grabs & the rest don't post at all. :(
Most tell me they see this post & that post, so I know they are still around.
Maybe some mods can look at some "international" sites & see how they set up & run things.
[quote:d25f59d82c]"grumpy old mans club" [/quote:d25f59d82c] The problem is the grumpy old men don't post anymore.

Hi
I went to buy something off the forum the other day and paid exactly what they wanted for it and then the bloke I was buying it off said that someone else offered him more money and would pick it up sooner at least the bloke had the common curtisy to let the deal go through. There is a lot of sly buggers about.
Cheers Nick
i know what you mean nick, i had the exact same thing happen when i got my gobies from matt  another forum member offered more $$ than he was askin for them thankfully matt is a top bloke and he kept them for me :D
its like anywhere you go these days theres still alot of genuine, honest people, but at the same time theres alot pricks that dont care about anything or anyone but themself and they dont give a ---- about who they cut/rip off to get what they want...
I know what you mean
Or, there could be lung-style.
It's dropped off a bit lately, but typically, 1st to post/show interest 1st in line etc. Walk down the list....
You get duped and the seller/duper gets a few weeks off (or uses the good old print method)
Mitch

Again the rules are not always enforced there or maybe it depends who the seller is.
i agree with this whole thread but do believe the onus is on the members more than the mods.

Well it looks like this has caused a bit of a stir, which I knew it would, because I've seen these things happen on here quite often, luckily its only happened to me once.
Because of the nature of the net it would be very hard for moderators to police this sort of behaviour as you just cant see whats going on.
What it all boils down to as I said in the start of this post, is manners , etiquette and maybe a bit of common decency.
Maybe now the perpetrators have been exposed a little bit, they will slow down although I doubt it.
Theo
I agree with emiee. It is common in society to try and blaim the "leaders" rather than take personal responsability for the actions. Themn if the leaders take drastic action they are branded mini hitlers for the action. Good luck to the leaders.
Steve
What realy gets me is when u ring about a tank
You Tell the guy you want it and u will be over in 30 minets
And when u get there he is loading it in some 1's car
Now that pisses me off
And getting a pm from some smart ass tell u that u r lucky u deleated ya post ( u know who u r)
Yep it is there and its not getting any better
and some people have no sence of humer
So Its first in best dressed so take a number
Andrew
I am not blaming the moderators either, thanks Steve. I know in the case of grummy that he has alot on his plate at the moment, so can't always be here. Theo mentioned manners, etiquette... such & covered it very well. With the help of the moderators it can run alot smoother. My point was that if they see something on the forum of bad forum delete it. It will hopefully help those with bad form to realise there mistake or if not they just piss off to another forum. Hang on, that used to happen in the old days
It is a 2 way street sometimes.
We all have bad luck stories with buyers, that is why I deal mostly with LFS. Befriended a couple makes my life on this topic easy.
Frenchy :D
Frenchy - Sorry but it is not all about you.
I was actually thinking at the time off other sites in other states that moderate tighter than this site and the mods there are believed to be too strict, This site is not as tight and has other problems.
I do take your point about "tighter" modding helping avoid problems, but then again there is something nice about a looser atmosphere.
Steve
I can be thankful this has not happend to me yet. I think the moderators do a great job here and i don't think it is their fult at all. This place would not be the place it is with all these great people if they pulled the ropes tighter. It comes down to the people buying and selling. I was there with Roo when we went to get that tank and could not believe we had droped everything to rush right over to get it just to watch him loading it into another car  . I am a great believer in what goes around comes around and karma will get them in the end.
Ya most of the people do the right thing
The mods r there to watch over things
Glen caught Lungies last post that was over the top
They do a good job and with out them this form would fall in to disaray
So good good job guys ( ya i'm a suck up too lmao)
Andrew
I've had people offer me more for my fish after I've already committed to selling them to someone else. But I do the righty and tell the second-comer that, too bad they're already sold.
Sure I'm grimacing that I could've got a few more measly dollars, but it comes down to integrity and good morals doesn't it? Having some principle and as Theo put it, some good manners, seperates us humans from the rest of the animals on the planet.
It's not too hard to be civilised and if we all acted decently the Mods wouldn't have to police these things.
Yep - I was dudded by a couple of forum members recently too - don't have to go into detail - they know who they are ... but let's not turn the forum into a whinge and bitch session ... I have just put it down to experience .... and "experience is a journey - not a destination".
My 2c worth .....
but ive found so far the good outweigh the so so by a lot ive made some good friends and most people ive met here have been very friendly and helpful. Like most bad eggs people soon find out about em and they just slowly disappear people talk and share which is the entire purpose of these forums. peter
I wouldnt say we're turning the forum into a whinge and bitch session, rather unleashing our frustrations occasionally, which I dont think does any harm, and lets other people know they're not the only ones getting the raw prawn.
Also, it lets those who arent playing the game know that we are onto them, and to the ones who have some kind of feelings, at least cause some embarrassment.
It would be nice if we could all be like the North Koreans and act happy and wave a little flag around all the time, but we're free and have the right to vent our frustrations occasionally.
Theo

Thats exactly what I believe in.
Hi Guys,
I've been a member & regular user of this forum since it was started and I must say, the good experiences and friends I have made over the years who share my passion for fish has far outweighed the few negative experiences. I take people as I find them, and the few who have taken advantage of that or tried to, have simply not been allowed another opportunity.
I love the way everybody on this forum is welcome to have input into discussions which is respected even though they may be the "devil's advocate" in a discussion ~ I have just this week been permanently banned from a Southern based forum for daring to challenge their administrators over deleting my post telling a Brisbane based member of theirs about the upcoming superauction as a good place to buy display sized africans at good prices (they seemed to feel that aquarium clubs and their functions were a challenge to their own classifieds and dispensing of expert knowledge).
We seem to face bad people and negative experiences in all aspects of our lives nowadays, but I personally believe we have a pretty good forum membership and admin here, and I for one get a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment from being a member.
Cheers, Doug
Ya well all in its mostly been good
But i do blame this form for my M.T.S lol one tank is never enough!! lol
I have met so many great people and have found out more info in the past year or so
Its the people you meet along the way that makes this hobby worth while
And I wouldn't half the fish and tanks i have to day
So to the people I have met and the people that make it all work Thanks
Andrew
Hi Doug.
Would this forum be ACE?
I've been in the sin-bin for a few months now.
I challenged deleting of posts (mine and others), and also posted a PM for all to view in public.
I must say, that forum runs awfully smoothly and is well run. But it's over political, too heavily moderated and it appears that a blind eye is used for some people.
Hopefully, they have finished reading George Orwell's animal farm as I suggested.
Maybe QLDCF should be in between ACE and Drummy.
Who knows.
Mitch
i hate this too. a few times this has happened to me like one time without naming names i drove 2 hours to get some fish tanks and once i got there the fella turned his phone off and never replied to any messages or anything like that. another thing that is annoying is when you put in a post someone who is not interested writes in saying that they have seen what you are selling cheaper. thats great. but just because you have seen it cheaper once does not mean that they are all that cheap. simple if you are not interested in a fish or a tank stay out of it. we are all on here necause we have the same intrest so why cant we all just get along. thanks.
Hi Mitch
No it wasn't ACE, I've never had a problem there or anywhere else, I'm usually pretty easygoing over most things. However, it seems the King & Queen of the City don't like their rules being challenged
Cheers, Doug
 at dfishkeeper - that is the only place I had a problem and I told them to delete my membership.
ACE is tightly moderated but you know where you stand - I like that - but they do get some flak for it.
the other QLD site is not moderated unless you come form here  but you know where you stand.
Here I thought was inbetween and again you know where you stand.
Don;t mind if I know where I stand - it is when the rules change for different people I get shirty.
Steve
I think a lot of people have had problems at that forum don't worry if the foundations aren't good the city will crumble.
[quote:380b1e527a]Frenchy - Sorry but it is not all about you.[/quote:380b1e527a] Oops & dam

eg; I had some new fish come in from down south. I had no problems with them at all. The 'person" was copping a bagging & was "time out" therefore couldn't reply. I tried my best to support the "person" & offer a positive. Only to have my posts deleted/edited...then told I was wrong, shit stirring & not helping the person involved. What the :?: :?: :?:
I like this place, people realise that there is more than one way to skin a cat. A healthy debate is good sometimes, seems to be a dying art.
Frenchy :D
Thanks Brad, I'm glad its not just me
Jeez, wouldn't life on QCF be boring without the likes of Justin & Theo livening up the debates :)
Anyway, it sounds like the city is missing out on the input of the sort of people they should be chasing as members rather than chasing away
Cheers, Doug
Frenchy - yes. But remember, that person wasn't banned. It took them a few days before they mentioned he was sin binned.
As mentioned, I am sin binned. It's been a few months now. As far as I knew, in sport, after a period of time, you are allowed back onto the field. You don't have too apologise/kiss the referee. But it appears this is not the case.
I wish the sin-binning was here. But it appears
a) The mods are too busy
b) The mods don't care
c) The forum members don't care
d) Memebers can't read the rules and follow them
e) The owners/management is not prepared to give out more mods
e) the list goes on
..
z) a combination of all of the above.
It just frustrate me, that my activity column always shows people are here, even the chat gets full, but there is very little activity outside the buy/sell region of this site
Do people not have problems, try new things, make observations, have a girpe about the hobby? If not, fair enough, but why not post about it, get some discussion going. It just annoys me, actually really annoys me, I only see this kind of stuff going on in other forums and I can hardly send a PM saying, hey can I drop over and have a look at your new setup diy project.
Anyway, getting a bit off tangent now, but I think if the focus of the forum is changed from "Getting fish/gear cheaper than the LFS" and more into a Queensland Cichlid Forum we will probably, but won't eliminate all of these dodgy operators.
Mitch

This should tell you something. Buying and selling, trying to get a bargain, hunting down a sought after fish are all integral parts of the hobby for a lot of people. Not everyone is in it to make the big bucks, or has the big bucks to pay some LFS prices. I for one, love browsing the for sale sections, looking at whats on offer and sometimes finding something I really want.
[quote:29c7577303="mjscookie"]but I think if the focus of the forum is changed from "Getting fish/gear cheaper than the LFS" and more into a Queensland Cichlid Forum we will probably, but won't eliminate all of these dodgy operators.[/quote:29c7577303]
I think if you changed the focus you would start to lose willing participants in this forum. The buy and sell are a big drawcard. People will always look at these sections whether they are buying/selling or not.
You will never get rid of the "dodgy operators" though.
Have you ever thought that some people may just feel to intimidated to post their queries, ideas or advice. There is an awful lot of "thou shall do as I say" attitude that arises in a lot of posts asking for advice or help. Ideas are just that ideas, and what works for one person may not work for another. Putting forward suggestions is great, but they need to be tempered with a bit of "niceness". Not everyone has been in this hobby for twenty years, some people know very little and look to this forum for sound knowledge without any attitude.
Just 1.5 of my 2 cents :D
[quote:906cf69ee2]Not everyone is in it to make the big bucks[/quote:906cf69ee2]There are no big bucks.
Why do people say fish shops charge big $$$ :?: Maybe look at fish shops from a different point of view. I save alot more money by dealing solely with shops. 8)
I think I can see where Mitch is coming from Muttley. The buy & sell is good, but some like to answer questions, debate, find out solutions to answers.
There are alot of people in these parts that have a settled fish room, or have a great relationship with a lfs, importer & the like. These people I see on foreign forums, so the buy & sell isn't a draw card to them. That is why I posted up a comment earlier, saying these guys talk to me about posts on this site. Therefore they are reading, yet they are not interested to post here. The more posters the better. That way too, they may even sell their goodies here.
I know why some of the experienced don't post here. This forum isn't for them, they read for gossip value, that is it. There is nothing here for them to learn about, they don't want to post as their views will get shot down, so whats the point for them. If we got the general discussion area going again, we can attract these kinds of people back. These are the ones that have been in the hobby for years. I would say Theo is the only person with 20 years experience who is a regular poster in the general discussion area.
As for new people, well I have seen so many times over the years on this forum, with newbies & simple questions. For some idiot to write google it, or suggest the person is thick, or calls them lazy for not researching themselves, or they give a stupid answer. What good is that? You lose the new guy for a start & make it harder for those with 1/2 an idea from posting. People seem to forget we were all new at one stage.
I see where you are coming from too Muttley in your last paragraph. Its hard for some people to make their typing come across as polite. I know I am one. For me talking to people is so much easier. Especially when discussing fish problems.
Frenchy :D
I am not in it for the big bucks. I loose about 1/20th of my income on this hobby. I do not sell anything.
Why?
a) People don't turn up
b) People want money back when they die
c) People accuse you of introducing disease into their tanks
What's the point. I just let them spit, if they survive, they survive and I cull very heavily so I have great lines. All for myself.
I buy fish from people on here, at auction and from LFS. They all have positives and negatives.
Why should people be intimidated to ask questions? You know what the problem is - generally the male alter-ego-internet persona. We act tough on here, and everytime someone says something it's an attack at us !
Here is an example, that has been brought up - google. There was one time, someone asked how to build a sump. That was it "How do you make a sump". I said "Have you tried google?"...From that he attacked me giving some long winded argument about how he has a degree that makes him a professional at internet surfing.
Well, it seems like a pretty resonable response. Typing into google "DIY sump" produces 1000's of hits. He didn't say that he had tried google or give any explaination of what the problem is.
This is just one of many examples. People say something is dying, the 1st response is "What are the water params", the reply is "Do you think i'm that stupid!"
We cannot expect to know people personally, let alone their fish keeping abilities. If people are willing to provide a detailed post regarding whats wrong, whats happened lately, and what they think the problem is, they won't get replys with simple questions.
As the title of this post goes, "Manners and Ettiqute". I don't waste my day thinking and using my time and $$$ to reply to something and then get hounded as if I was having a go. I would much prefer to have sleep.
Mitch
BTW -
Theo - you need a special award. I think the last post you started here went for this long (water aging in barrells LOL).
Mitch
[quote:6be3430b7a="here fishie fishie"]Why do people say fish shops charge big $$$ :?: [/quote:6be3430b7a]
Because I have seen first hand the differences in prices at a fair range of shops and compared prices to forum prices.
[quote:6be3430b7a="here fishie fishie"]I think I can see where Mitch is coming from Muttley. The buy & sell is good, but some like to answer questions, debate, find out solutions to answers.[/quote:6be3430b7a]

This comment by you is exactly what I am talking about. Its the behaviour of a few that turns off a majority. It only takes some smart comments from someone deriding thoughts put forward and the contributor thinks exactly that, "what is the point".
[quote:6be3430b7a="here fishie fishie"]If we got the general discussion area going again, we can attract these kinds of people back.[/quote:6be3430b7a]
Then I would suggest we have a new section that is for off fish topics. A "gossip area", so that we can have a good and sensible "general aquarium discussion" area. This would allow people to talk totally off the topic of anything fishy and would encourage people to take the general area a bit more seriously. I don't know whether the mods or admin here really keep up with whats going on, but I have seen ideas come up in the suggestion area and I have PM'd several mods asking for follow up on some of these ideas, and never recieved a reply. So this idea may be totally ignored as well. Hopefully not as it would be beneficial and would further the cause people like Mitch and yourself are pursuing.
[quote:6be3430b7a="here fishie fishie"]As for new people, well I have seen so many times over the years on this forum, with newbies & simple questions. Its not just how they word their responses, it is the immaturity, the niggling at other members, the hijacking of threads for their own purposes. I can tell you that when I first joined this forum, I was nearly put off by the antics of some members who always seemed to start verbal fights in the middle of other peoples threads. Whether done in jest or not, this is the sort of stuff that turns people away.
Anyway, this is a good debate and has attracted a lot of good input so far. Hopefully the mods or admin take some of it on board.
Thanks mate

You got that right. :D But some of us prefer to just be ourselves as we have nothing to prove and everything to learn.

That is what we should be encouraging, I agree. If the experienced people here provide in depth information from their experiences, then new people are going to see that it is ok to put up a long-winded explanation of what is going wrong, whats happened lately etc. This would therefore stimulate reasonable responses as you are suggesting.
[quote:c83c3ba8d2="mjscookie"]As the title of this post goes, "Manners and Ettiqute". I don't waste my day thinking and using my time and $$$ to reply to something and [b:c83c3ba8d2]then get hounded as if I was having a go[/b:c83c3ba8d2]. I would much prefer to have sleep.[/quote:c83c3ba8d2]
I hope that wasn't directed at me, as I haven't been hounding you at all. I am just joining in what is a healthy debate and putting forward my thoughts. I agree with some of your points for sure, but I have some points as well. But that is all part of the fun of creating an interesting thread
[quote:2b732669ad="mjscookie"]BTW - Theo - you need a special award. I think the last post you started here went for this long (water aging in barrells LOL).

I second that and this reinforces what you are aiming for Mitch. Experienced people like Theo stimulating beneficial and interesting debates :D
All I can say is that, if one of my posts can lure Doug(DFishkkeeper) out to make a comment then my work here is nearly done.
I also find it very hard to believe that Doug could get banned from anywhere, if he can get banned, than even the Pope would be in trouble.
An award would be nice, (Joking) but what I am glad to see is, that so many people have read this thread and made their own comments, and by doing so we can all relate to some of the incidents that happen from time to time on the forum.
Hopefully some people will learn that there is a certain way to behave on the forum, just as in life, and if so, then this post will have done its job.
Theo
Well put Theo.
I guess that what it comes down to is people acting towards other forum members with the same respect and courtesy they would expect in return. This is something that no amount of moderating can control.
Yeah I was amazed to see Doug got banned at a site, that is until I saw which site it was. :?
On moderating, I personally think QLDCichlid forum has just the right medium - not too heavy handed so everyone can have a say, but at the same time any blatant rudeness to one another is firmly shut down.
I've had posts deleted off that site Doug got banned from, simply for expressing an opinion on their rules (the one requiring a certain number of posts over a certain period time or get yourself de-registered - thank God this site doesn't have that!).
On the other hand I've visited other forums (a Home Theatre discussion forum in particular), where there's little moderation at all. So there's pleny of abuse hurled between participants, usually because of a simple disagreement in opinion, and even threats of bodily harm to a one another! Ruthless sites like this demonstrate to me how easily things get outta control with out some level of policing.
Discussion on net forums is done largely anonymously, which encourages an open dialogue for better or for worse, so it's a fine line for moderators to tread in order to keep their forum successful.
QLDCichlid's been around for a few years now, so I would say the mods doing a good job speaks for itself and don't change a thing. Sure there's some deals that go sour or people get stung, but I don't think mods can or should have to police that (unless it's blatant behaviour of course).
Good on Theo for stirring up a lively discussion - first one in a long while! :D

Finally I know which site you all are talking about
I agreed as I personally read more than making post  some people seem to use the "fish" forum as a chit chat forum to boost their post count
I was agreeing with you Multey, just giving other reasons why people don't post.
I agree that for Doug to get banned form somewhere is unbelievable, he's such a nice bloke.
Multey my answer to the big bucks question was [quote:8b892886b7]Maybe look at fish shops from a different point of view. I save alot more money by dealing solely with shops [/quote:8b892886b7] Your answer was [quote:8b892886b7]Because I have seen first hand the differences in prices at a fair range of shops and compared prices to forum prices. [/quote:8b892886b7]
Now I will explain what I do. This is also helpful for those bitter at dealing privately.
A hobbyist never makes money, mostly. So how can I "save"?
Dry goods is my biggest expense, by selling fish to shops for the same price I get here, gets me credit. Because I have a good repour with a shop or 2 & we work on a 2 way street, I don't pay retail. Whenever something good {livestock} comes in, I get a great deal as the owner will know that when I breed the fish he gets the young at a good price, easier for him to re sell, once again my credit stays good. Then again I could be just lucky. But I know I am not, as I know of a few others that do this too.
For me I don't breed shitloads either so this in practice works well. I don't have to worry about selling privately.
ps;Yes I have some privately bought live stock, wouldn't even be 20%.
pps; Theo you shit stirring bastard,{jok} good on ya, keep up the good work
Frenchy :D

Mate, I am lucky enough to have an arrangement just like yours. I have hardly paid for any supplies or accessories for a long time :D Its a good thing if you can get it.
Cheers
Hey Guys,
I must admit I was a bit shocked myself. Not only did I get banned, I even got an email today warning me that screen shots are being taken of my posts on QCF criticising that other forum 8O
Oh well, at least I know now what I only suspected earlier
Cheers, Doug
Wow. This other forum must be very stupid. You don't think the sydney-siders look at this forum.
Mitch
i cant believe that! you havent even said anything bad.. sounds like theyre a bit paranoid and they are taking it way too far! all you tried to do was help out a qld based member find some fish on a forum where there isnt alot of qld members who post fish for sale. i also mentioned the auction and had my post deleted  i wonder if beefa has found this site yet?..
[quote:ed05bfaf5e]You don't think the sydney-siders look at this forum. [/quote:ed05bfaf5e]
Who cares :?: We are talking about the truth here. No attacks on anyone, seems like it has been cases of helping someone out. Maybe they feel that advising an Auction in Qld is a clash of interest with the Auction in Sydney. 8O
When we had the yellow dicussion, I even told a moderator I am posting my views up here. They were welcome to reply. At least here I knew the posts weren't going to get edited or deleted. Well ok, one sent our mod a message & the post was locked.
