Title: new Aquarium -water advise
Post by: kj2006 on October 20, 2006, 02:36:31 PM
Hi all, just a quick question.
I am about to fill up a new tank 5x2x2, I can either do it the old fashion way via the hose (town Water) and treat the water with the appropriate treatments for removing chlorine etc, or I have a 4 stage revers osmosis system that I could use.  I'm leaning twd the filtered water however I think I would also then need to add various products to replace a lot of what I took out.
What do you think????

Thanks in advance.
KJ
ps. aiming for a well planted take with mainly south American fish.
I'm in Brisbane

Depends on the fish as South america has a few different water conditions.  I have tap water in my 6 footer planted with tetras, rams and aggies.  (Used to have just the aggies).  Good for general maintanance.  for breeding then I mess with the water.

RO units waste a lot of water; with filling a 5ft i hope you recycle the waste water back to the garden or something.
You should not use 100% RO water in the tank as it is far too soft and will cause a dramtic pH crash.

Thanks for that, it looks like tap it will be.  Don't worry about the waste water from the RO, it goes into the washing machine, or if that is full garden.
