hi just wondering a few basic questions. i have been researching them but can not find the answers to these questions. how often can they spawn. if i had a colony of say 3m and 10f and they are about 5cm also roughly what price would you be able to get for there fry and at what size. thanks.
Ya I would say u can get a batch of fry out of 1 yellow every 2 to 3 months
Depending if u strip them or not
But if u let the hold full term I would rest her 4 a while till she puts condishen back on
Most yellows here are priced around a $ a cm more if there breeders may be 2$ a cm
Some yellows will breed at 5 to 6 cm's well mine did any ways
Hop this helps
Andrew
thanks for the help they sound like they pay for themselves. how many could be kept in a 4*15*15 and they are in demand arent they. i am just a bit scared because i spent heaps of money 6 months ago on common bristlenose and after getting them to breed could not sell there fry unless i sold them for less then 50 cents each. thanks.
ya u can put 13 fish in that size tank just keep it clean and a good air ration
I find if you have a good col of good yellows
you can always sell them

Yellows are probably one of the easiest to breed behind hongi's. I usually get a mouthful every month from mine, and I don't have a lot of females. There is one dominant male who tends to do all the breeding work though. They start reasonably small as they tend to be a bit of a slow growing fish. I let my girls carry their first few mouthfuls as they are learning the ropes still. Usually found the first two times they didn't carry the mouthful for more than a few days. They get the hang of it though.
Yellows are always in demand. Usually the $1 a cm.
I keep my colony of 9 in with a colony of blues  and a small colony of cobues in a 4ft tank. The yellows fend for themselves against these other fish without much voilence.
this all sounds good. in the next couple of weeks i am getting 60 5cm roughly electric yellows 30 from two different sources. does anyone have a rough idea of what sex ratio i could be looking at. out of 60 would i get more males or more females any help would be great thanks.
From my experience and what i have been told, they are usually top heavy with males.
i thought that would be the answer unfortunately. oh well once i figure out whats what i will sell theb excess males at what size can they be sexed and how long untill the fry reach 4cm i know these are really basic questions but after searching numerous sites and google i still have no idea as none of them answer these questions. thanks.
If there good fish and your water is good
Thay should get their first mouth fulls at about 6 to 7 cm's
But there is no telling there r a lot of things that can step in
I know some 1 that had a smaller tank did stuff all water changes
And her fish grow faster and bred sooner out of the same batch of fry
But all up young fish don't hold fry 4 every long u might have to wait for the 3rd of 5th batch till they hold adleast 2 week b 4 the fry r worth striping
So I hop this helped

With so many fish the easiest way would be to wait until they start breeding. Take out females {holding}, place them in a seperate tank. That way you will have your females sorted. Throw in a couple of the best looking males in with females, once you have a few females in there. Keep doing this until you have what ever size colony or until you run out of fish. Sell off excess males & fish that look horrible. Yellows are a plenty out there, good looking ones sell easy, ugly ones don't.
Frenchy :D
yeah that sounds good to me. and also what is the best food to feed 5cm yellows just a bit of flake and maybe even some cichlid pellets. thanks.
I feed mine a mixture of, spirulina flake, cichlid pellets & frozen mysis shrimp.
Frenchy :D
ok cool thanks.

Wouldn't it be better to kull the ugly ones? illiminating the ugly genes, rather than selling them and spreading the ugly genes?
I've read that good/resposible breeders should kull for this reason.
i think selling the horrible fish is irrisponsible and is cheating the buyer.
I get what you mean Ben, culling deforamities....We are talking about Plec raising yellows that should of already been culled by the breeder. Then again I am assuming Plec is buying off a good breeder to start with. What I was talking about is Plec is buying 60 fish, he can afford to be fussy.
Why isn't it fair, we are talking about Electric Yellows here. There is no such thing as an "A grade" yellow to start off with. The ones he will be passing off won't be that bad surely.{Hopefully}
As for not fair on the buyer, I get sick of hereing that, it is buyer beware. Take responsibility for their own actions. What happened to people saying, oh they aren't that flash I will pass, or I can see they are sick no thanks.
Then again, some people can't cull, they don't have the ticker.
Frenchy :D
I know a guy with some nice yellows already adalts
So breeding will be no problem
The only problem is there on hold at the momet but i will be seeing him again this week end
So I will ask him whats the go with them and i will let u know or get him to give u a yell if there up 4 sale again
There realy nice gold in color

I can vouch for at least 50% of his stock being of excellent quality  Get yourself some New Life Spectrum (Thera A) bro, If your LFS does not stock it let me know and I will organise you some!
Hey there. New to mouthbrooders, how can you define stripping a fish? Also do you know of anywhere to find female elec yellows? Ive got a lage 12cm+ male, and 16 3/4cm fry. Im after a few nice larger females. Any suggestions? Also what kind of filter do you recommend in a fry tank? Thx!
ah not sure where to get the females and stripping a fish means taking the fry from the females and putting them in a fry saver and a sponge filter is the way to go thanks.
Can you recommend anywhere to get sponge filters? Im looking at these type of sponge filter (not from ebay of course lol)

i need about 6 of them, small-medium size. Around 60L tanks
THX!
Yep I rate that style filter.
Milking or stripping a fish can be tricky espec when they are small.
Electric yellows in an established colony often breed and hold really well.
One of the fish I rarely milk, but always regret when they spit/swallow....
AT the moment I am using a soft plastic squeeze tomato sauce bottle,
just have one person hold fish mouth open facing down into bucket of tank water
and squeeze sauce bottle full of aquarium water into mums mouth to flush out fry.
I always check the females mouth with a turned over tank fluro behind me.
No sense leaving one or two as female will continue to not eat.
around 2 weeks can be a good time to milk, if they look to early leave it a few more days next batch.
good for numbers.
But yellows normally hold full term and are cool for nursery tanks and larger floating 'fry saver' style containers.
I like to use things like icecream tubs with windows cut in them. Just superglue new scotchbrite pads over the windows.
Or use netting of some sort. Ya may need a lid to stop fish jumping out, and protection from larger fish sucking babys out.
As to selling fish that don't have perfect breeder qualitys for a fussy market....
Well to some fish a fish is a pet, and anything different on it often brings a good idea for a name and a bit more character.
Electric yellows are a freaky melanistic morph of a blue fish as it is,
Breeders going for something have their own ideas on what an A grade yellow is.
For me it was some nice deep orange perfect rock hard fish I bought from a breeder Mr Blake.
Absolute stunners, sera fed and yea just really nice chilled fish.
Even the runts of the bunch were just great fish,
but many prefer the almost albino ones, and others the more bolder striped.
Other people like the cheapest,
it's a yellow fish to go with me blue and orange one.
WHat do I care if it's not the perfect textbook yellow,
at least I don't have to wait for it too colour up!
That said I cull quick and soon.
Saves money on feeding predator tanks.
Somehow a jack having an excited swim after something is more important than a few bucks.
But I'd as sooner give it away to someone trying to set up a cheap tank.
Theres just too many fussy people for the odd less than perfect fish to make a dent by living out a long life.
