Title: do we need an air pump for tanks that are on a sump system?
Post by: Cory Fan on October 24, 2006, 12:41:13 PM
Hi,

As the titile said, do we need an air pump for tanks that are on a sump system??

Had seen many set up that have air stone in the tanks that are on a sump system, but why do we need an air pump for?? Doesn't the water flowing to the sump and back to the tank provide enough water movement and "oxygen" to the water??

Hi,
trickle systems with sumps generally provide a high air saturation but if you have alot of fish in the system it doesn't hurt to have a airstone in there aswell.

Yep - you do.

I use the airstones primarily for extra circulation. Also if the pump fails you've got something moving the water around until you notice. There's no problem having too much air - it's not enough you have to worry about!

One a sumped system there's also time you want to isolate one tank (ie turn of the flow from the sump) and put in an air filter. It's a heap easier if you've got the air tube already there.

As Gofast said it adds extra circulation which in turn helps remove the smaller debrre from the tank by getting it off the bottom and into the water column and into the overflows for the system. This helps the whle system to work abit more efficiently. :D
