Post by: AvJohnny on October 27, 2006, 09:47:41 PM
Big hello to everyone.
 :D
I would like some suggestions on a type of new cichlid to perhaps get...

What I am looking for is one of the new types of cichlid/African.

So please post some suggestions...

Regards,
John.

It's nice to change around and get a few new species every now and then - huh John ????
I have recently purchased young colonies of several fish I have never kept before - ie maingano, eureka reds and sulphur crested lithobates.
I will be interested to read the replies and see what other enthusiasts suggest.
Regards

I have maingano, kept eureka reds previously(nice peacok), haven't had sulphur crested lithobates(kept Elect. Blues instead).

There was one type that came up at the Gold coast auction that I was interested in.
Can't remember the type though, I think they were a Malawi...
Blue and Yellow colouration...
Anyway.

Regards,
John.

why not change completly and set up a south american dwarf cichlid tank,
Apistogrammars are always fun to watch and need a bit of skill to breed.
another cichlid i think everyone needs to keep at least once in their aquarium keeping days is a polleni, they are almost extinct in their natural range in madagaska and they are a really nice fish, one of my favourite cichlids of all time.  mine is constantly making me bleed and punishing my anytime i put my hand near its tank.
well thats my 2c anyway.

Two suggestions.

Option 1.  Choose a common fish and select a colony of the best fish avaialable and selectively breed to improve the colour and vitality of them.  Many of the most common are prime needers of this approach - much like the old Krib project started to improve kribensis.  Many of the local bred rams need this approach too as too small as adults,  or what about the good old cobalt zebras.  (I would have said yellows but there seems to be a few good colonys in peoples tanks even if they are not getting into the stores, and you cannot find a good socoloffi in Sydney at all - but up here I have seen a few good ones.)

Option 2.  Go on one of the Melbourne or Sydney sites and find something from there that is not common there.  It is amazing to me the differences in the capital citys in terms of what species are kept in numbers and/or quality.

That is the hardest question to answer as it is all personal taste, size of tanks.......

Firstly it is a case of picking up what appeals to you the most. If you like the looks of it, then you will enjoy keeping it. Most of the nice ones sell too.   I know a few boys that collect the exotics, but they are hard to pass on as they aren't that appealing to most people.
You can always go through some cichlid galleries, see what you like & ask if they are available. If it isn't here, then there may be something similar around.

The joys of today is that you don't even have to do that anymore. Sure there are some different fish kept in different cities due to trends. But as for the new goodies that float around, there are fish keepers & lfs that supply all that is available down south. You just have to know where to look. Beenleigh Cichlid & Aquarium, Wetpetz, Aquarium & Petland, Aquariums Alive is just a view that come straight off the top off my head for shops that get goodies in.
There are a few private breeders, I won't say who as that is not my place. Find out what you like & ask away.

Anyway, I like the look of demasoni, yellows, kingsizei, cobwe, mbamba, white calvus, comps....

The guy from Beenleigh told me that Cichla Monoculus (excuse spelling) were noxious and that i shouldn't have them... ???

Are they ?

Cichla Monoculus have not been declared noxious in the state of Queensland, the full list of noxious fish in Queensland can be found here
