Hi all,
Has anybody on the list had an attempts at the Mattenfilter concept? If so, I would like to see your thoughts on the subject and also a possible supplier of the foam.
A link for the system is http://www.janrigter.nl/mattenfilter/

I know some AusNative fish keepers in Germany and Belgium swear by them, so I'm interested in giving it a go however I'm interested in sourcing the actual stiff foam at an affordable price. So any sources would be appriciated.

Graham, I think you can use any foam thick or course. I think the most important part is ensuring the foam stays upright and does not fall or slump. As the article stated, it's only the first 2-3cm that the bacteria actually does the work. I personally think that it's the whole thickness of the foam that does it.
If you want to hold it upright, you can use egg crates or get those big plastic bread crates used for delivering breads to shops and just cut out the part that's like the egg crates. (But don't tell anyone I told you that, I just heard that others do it :-))))
So use the egg crates/bread creates one each side and use cable ties to told hold together. Very cheap and easy. Now for the foam, there's a store over coopers plains that can cut foam to size. I can't remember the details. PM me if you are still looking.
Cheers,
dan
