Title: How much weight can the second floor in a house support?
Post by: on June 09, 2005, 06:43:00 PM
I am plannin on putting a 8ft tank upstairs, but thought that it woudl be better if i asked if the second floor could hold it first. According to american standards floors can support 40pounds per square foot and can support more if the floor is near load bearing walls. According to the american standards the tank will be ok, but was wondering wat the australian standars are like, i am assuming they would be better than american ones?   Dylan<

hey mate,<
> I work in the building trade allthough not as a chippy, can still give you some advice......<
>If the floor is made from concrete slab like in a block of units you could put a swimming pool in there if you wanted to - no problem.<
> If it is timber floor it will be supported by floor joists which are damn strong. These joists are usually spaced about     300 mm apart so if you were to put the tank stand directly onto the floor there is a chance that the legs could
eak through the flooring if the leg wasnt positioned directly over a joist and between two joists. This problem is easily solved by getting a piece of flat timber sheet about 20mm thick and large enough to support all legs of the tank stand on the sheet of timber, basically you are spreading the weight evenly over the entire surface area of the sheet and not directly from a leg to the floor, pretty simple just go to a local timber factory rather than a hardware store u will save $$$<

it shouldnt really matter because the joist are only about    300 mm apart, the timber sheet you put down will easily spread over at least 2 3 maybe 4 joists, but if u still concerned just drive to a building site where the house is still having the frame put together have a look for yourself how it all works and speak to the builder or chippy on site thay will be more than happy to advise <

hey mate<
>I have a
eeding set up that is on a solid timber stand consisting of 2- 4x2 and 6- 3x1 foot tanks.  This is set up on timber flooring on the second level of my house.  I did as ash said and put a timber sheet along the entire base of the stand and i have not had any problems what so ever.  This thing would easily weigh a couple of tonnes. so i would say that unless the timber in my house is actually solid steel than u would be fine in putting your tank up stairs.<
>good luck mate<
