Title: saving bristlenose eggs
Post by: Flikkitty11 on March 01, 2007, 09:28:54 AM
How do i raise bristlenose from eggs?
About a week ago i accidently sucked up about 14 b/n eggs when cleaning my 3f tank. the eggs were put into a breeding net in a little tank filled with water from the 3f tank...
some died after about a day and by yesterday they were all gone
can anyone give me some tips incase i suck eggs up again cos one of the females looks like she will lay some soon
thanx, flik

U need to bubble the eggs, that is why the male sits on the eggs fanning them.  If the eggs don't have water flowing aroung them they will fungus up.

Easiest way is to put an airstone (coloured plastic one works best) under a plastic strainer (this can be done in the breeding net), and adjust the airflow so u are just moving the eggs gently.

slightly unorthadox but when My bristlenose kicked some eggs out of their log I put them into a ice cream container with their tank water and put an airstone in there I got 100% sucess out of that.

Hope it Helps

or you can make one of these with some foam siliconed it the out side and float it in the same tank as they were laid.

Would you recommend these methods to all eggs that are moved to a seperate tank?

My silver dollars spawned last night(in a community tank that isn't set up for breeding) i managed to collect about 200 eggs and move them to another tank. Overnight a white "fluff" formed all over the eggs... is it because the eggs are just sitting still on the bottom?

thanks for the advice!
the water in the tank was moving pretty well cos there was a sponge filter on one side. hopefully next time we don't knock them out of the log and they will hatch naturally
thanks again,

mate add a few drops of meth . blue to the water to stop the fungus build up on the eggs and change the water every day to help minimize the fungus build up

MFK,
yes. you need to keep the eggs gently bubbling all the time.

the way i think is that if the parents are going to be laying eggs the water that their in must be ok. if you can bubble them in the same water or same tank it must be a plus.
they wont be laying eggs in water that the PH is off the scale or nitrate way to high.

how do you know the water that you have put them into is ok or at least as good as the tank water they were in.??

if you have your tanks on a system well it wont matter as all  the water will/should be the same.

i put all my fronnies eggs in one of my floaters and drop an air stone in with them.

the other reason that the eggs will get a "fluffy" look is because the eggs are not fertile.

every afternoon i check all the eggs and pick out any that have gone off.
even if the other eggs are ripe the fungus will grow onto the good eggs and kill them.

that will be a dozen silver dollars.

cheers

Thanks for the info mate!

I syphoned water out of my main tank where the parents spawned and filled a 10g with it, also added a sponge filter from the main tank.

i'm sure i saw something moving inside the eggs that night, but in the morning they were cover in white fluff(fungus?)

So, yeh... i'll do things differently next time. least i know i have a definate breeding colony(4f/3m).

Cheers
