Title: Food Suggestions for Royal Whiptails
Post by: fishnet on March 30, 2007, 07:57:15 PM
I've got 3 Royal Whiptail Catfish in a well planted 3ft tank. Between them, they're consuming a significant amount of plant matter to the point where some of the new plants are being destroyed.

Can anyone make some suggestions on things i could feed them to draw them away from my plants?

I put some cucumber and cabage in the tank. They didn't touch the cucumber, but almost devoured a full cabage leaf over a few days.

They will benefit from a protein rich pellet. Sinking cichlid pellet or shrimp pellet (corydoras food). You could also use some sinking algae wafers. The  cabbage is a good idea.

My Royals' absolute favourite food is thin slices of boiled or microwaved Kent or Jap pumpkin.  They are not keen on other sorts of pumpkin. They will also eat blanched zuchini.

A far as plants go, I know of no way to stop them chewing amazon sword plants.  They even chew through the roots of the toughest sword plants.

Barclaya longifolia is absolute caviar to Whips   :(
