Title: Tank stand stability
Post by: on June 10, 2005, 06:59:00 PM
Hi guys<
><
>I have a
and new Dalbarb stand which I have acquired, however I am a little concerned about its stability with pressure points it will place on the tank.  The tank will be a 6x2x2. which will weigh 600kg plus the weight of glass and substrate.<
>The stand , as is, has only 4 slats which the tank will sit upon. i am a little concerned that even with the styro at 20mm that this will place alot of load on these 4 spots and may lead to fracturing!!!!!!   <
><
>Any suggestions?????<
>I am not keen on adding more slats........but was wondering if placing some kind of board over the top of these slats would help. And if so WHAT KIND DO I NEED......<
><
>Am I concerned for nothing or do I have a reason to be worried ?<
><
>Thanks<

Hey mate, I think you are worried about nothing, if the stand feels solid and is a fish tank stand of the same diminsions of your tank then it should be fine. I have a 6*19*25 on a similar stand and it isnt going anywere mine has slats kina like this |_|__|_| with four doors.  They are suprisingly sturdy.<
>Best of luck<

if you are concerned, put a piece of 10mm ply or similar to spread the weight evenly.<

>i have a 6x2 stand with three 2x2x18 and it had no support
acing except a small middle piece.<
>so i patched it up with some 70x35 and then a sheet of ply.<

Custom stands are ok as long as you treat them as there are custem wood stands, dont get too much water around them. There cheap for a reason.

Hi<
><
>I wouldn`t say that this Dalbarb stand is cheap.....$1380..insurance job as I had a burst tank 6x2x2 and wrecked the previuos stand.<
>The reason I have posted this question is that I was talking to a tank supplier, and they said that they would be hesitant to put a large tank on this kind of slat formation and most tanks that they repair are from base fractures. However that said, I would have thought that Dalbarb would know what they are doing. ( as ILOVEFISH has suggested )<

Hey Justin<
><
>I would replace the slates with a piece of half inch external ply. It is probably OK but if you dont do anything now you will always be thinking about it, and after the previous incedent, it will always be on your mind, so for your benefit get a board on there. does the stand have any other front to back cross supports? maybe one or two of these would be good aswell.<
><
>All my stands are steel and have a 19mm piece of mdf on them that is painted to be water proof, but i load up the tanks with rocks and really want that base support, and as a rule I over engineer everything! lol<
><
>Anyways buddy take care, hopefully we can catch up again soon. Mick, Rockhampton<
