Title: collony or community?
Post by: ashhhh on June 12, 2005, 12:36:00 PM
im tossing up whether to have a community american setup or a colony of 1 american species setup for my display tank.Want to try and stay away from too much tank aggression.Would a colony be the way to go for many fish with less aggression?I have a 4x2x1.5ft tank. What male to female ratios are best, dont necessarily want
eeding. What species are pretty for display and fairly placid (colony wise)please include common names and what number of fish would be comfortable in this size tank? please share what you know <
>thanks Ash

i recon if you want a colony of americans then you should go for Geophagus surinamensis <
>they are a really good looking fish, happy in a colony and quite placid from all accounts. give Doug (DFishkeeker) a bell, he''s got a heap of fry almost ready to sell (see in the Breeder''s Register)<

Hi Ash<
><
>Matt is spot on, Geophagus surinamenis do really well as a colony, are a spectacular and interesting fish, and are not aggressive for a fish that grows to around 20cm. The picture on the link Matt provided does not do them justice, they are a spectacular fish with very
ight colours and long trailing fins. You''re welcome to come and have a look at my
eeding size colony and if you like them, I have 4-5cm fry available. I''m at Palm Beach, you can call me on 5576 6784 to get the address and organise a time to come around.<

Yeah, what they said sounds good, although i think if you wanted a colony of another species, it might not be so plasid. <
><
>I think a colony would be more agressive, and more likely to
eed. I keep a colony of firemouths, and all they do is fight, non stop, and firemouths are supposed to be peaceful in comparision to many other americans. <
><
>If you want a more peaceful tank i would choose to have a few different species.<
><
>If i had a tank your size i would get:<
>2 firemouths<
>2 Convicts<
>2 Salvins<
>2 Blue acaras<
><
>Keep the pH at 7  and a high GH and KH. Fine gravel but not sand, and have plants in pots so they dont get dug up.<
><
>I think agression among americans is inevitable but i definantly think a community would be less agro than a colony. <

You can''t beat Discus for colour and they make a beautiful display tank.<
