I know there's just been a post about blue eyes that mentioned breeding, but additional questions tend to get lost in threads so I thought I'd post my own.

A little while ago I asked about breeding blue eyes and someone (can't remember who) suggested making a "mop" as a substrate for egg laying.

Just wondering if anyone can inform me as to what kind of thread (I have a feeling it was just ordinary wool) to make it out of, any colour preference, how long to leave it in the tank etc.

Cheers,

Daniel.

It's been a while, but when I bred rainbows I used a simple mop made
from a loop of airline about 10cm in length joined with connector.
I then tied plain wool (green or blue) around the airline so that the
strands were about 15-20cm long.

Very cheap, so I would rotate a few of them every couple of days - Id place the egg laden mops into a bare tank dosed with Methylene Blue and
an airstone and wait for them to hatch.

Hope this helps? Good Luck  :D

Cheers

I found the easiest way to make a breeding mop was to wind wool (thickness is no great issue) around your hand about 20 times.
Tie a knot in one end so that all loops are tied together. Cut every loop at the other side from the knot. You now have 20 strands of wool about 18cm long tied together in the middle. Take a piece of styrofoam about 3cm square and make a small hole in the middle force the knot into the hole. you now have a simple floating breeding mop suitable for rainbows blue eyes and lots of other fish.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll give it a go.

Savage_roo (sorry, can't find you're name), what are you referring to as common rainbows? Eastern rainbows, Crimson spot rainbows?Or is there a "Common rainbow" that I'm unfamiliar with (I'm just starting to find my feet as far as latin names, common names and varients go). And what do you keep them in? I'm thinking about setting up a native tank and just want to see what people have got.

Thanks again,

Daniel.

Daniel,
Re mops
If you fancy a trip to Deception Bay I have a couple of mops you can have, they were used for breeding Killie fish.

I find dark green is the best colour for mops. Make sure you use 'Acrylic yarn' and not real wool. Real wool has lanolin which will make reduce hatch rates of the eggs. I tie the mop to a small piece of polystyrene so it floats. And sterilize between uses with some diluted bleach.

Make a mop out of coconut husk.Tie it to a fish float and woolah easy pessy.
