Lost one of my pride and joys last night - my 7" male Venustus as seen in my Avatar pic. Had him 5 years.
His death was more or less the result of a sudden change in his personality in the last few months. He was always the dominant male in my display tank until last Xmas when my P.Crabro took on a slightly more assertive stance. So overnight the Venustus was cowering in the corner displaying the drab giraffe colours despite being the biggest fish. Significantly he didn't just become subservient to the Crabro but also to most other fish in the tank, and I regularly saw smaller fish nipping at his fins while he remained still in a corner of the tank.
All came to an end last night when I found him in a rock cave (which is unusual) and noticed a nice big chunk taken out of his side. He was still alive, the poor bugger, so I took him downstairs to the hospital tank ready to dose him with some Melafix. However when I got him there he started to float upside down and upon close inspection of his wound it was quite significant - an actual hole and I could see thru to inside him. So in the end I had to euthanise him in an ice slurry mix and put him out of his misery.

An inglorious end to a magnificent fish.  :(
