hi everyone sorry to bother you but being new to fish i have to ask a question that everyone has probably seen heaps of times before. what are some easy fish to breed that i can make some money on as well as enjoy. i have 2 spare 4ft tanks and 4 spare 2ft tanks. at current i am breeding common and albino bristlenose. and just brought a breeding pair of oscars from annerley aquarium. i also want to stay away from mollies and things like that. i wanted to breed peppermint bristlenose as well but they are so hard to find. any help would be great thanks.

thanks for the advice. does any one know any place that has breeding pairs or colonys. also what would youse recomend if i had 300 dollars to spend on a good pair or colony. i really want to expand heaps but can only do yhis by making money. the convicts sound good but the dude at the lfs told me that they are only good as food for my oscars. thanks.

Honestly your not going to make money out of it, i dont know of anyone who has a small setup and profits from fish.

And least of which is asking people what fish will make money, if you want to make it a big hobby and get alot of varietys, start with getting fish that you like, start off by looking at the photos researching there behaviour, and looking into what tank mates they can have.

Are you trying to make this into a business or just keep it has a hobby?

Key i think to enjoying the hobby and making something out of the fish, to get bigger setups, is to first enjoy and like the fish you keep.

Convicts arnt gonna make you money, you would get 50cents each for them at 3-4cm, Which if you work out your time, the cost of food an chemicals, you would be better off spending that time working at macca's.

Sorry for the downer, but lots of newbies think they can make alot of money from breeding fish, and some of the experienced keepers can, not alot but more than cover there costs, but to do that you have to know and guess what people are going to be buying in a year or more time.

My advice would be to get some good qaulity e. yellows and breed them, you will always move them at the auctions. But they have to be good, and to know whats good and whats not takes time.

Im only saying all this becuase i went through exactly the same thing over a year ago now, trying to figure it all out, now i buy fish that i will enjoy to keep first, and then I hope to be able to make abit out of them when they breed.

Cheers,

bristlelover

i dont want to get rich i just want enough to buy some new fish every now and then and a new tank. i just want to breed for fun but more expensive fish like oscars or something.

If you get your self a larg tank and look around the form
Just pick up some fry that sell well in the shops
Grow them to a larger size than sell them
No breeding no sorting out what fish in what
Or just swap them for the fish you realy like and you win ither way
Its simpel and a bit easer than stripping fish and trying to get them to a sellable size
he foot steps in the sands of time arn't made by sitting on your ass

Did someone touch a nerve here, or is it in jest???

Im with Grum on this one - do your research, see what people are buying and selling (these forums are a great wealth of info in that regard!). Find out what you think will work for you and research that fish. Then have a crack at it, but dont expect to make much or to do so quickly. Making money out of fish is a bit like making money from an airline - "How do you make a little money out of an airline? Start with a lot of money...", or "How do you make a small airline? Start with a big one...". lol.

Anyways - good luck, ask any questions you may have and we'll see if we can be of further help. Always good to see another hobbyist!

Cheers

Don't worry g his first ever post was havin a go at me about the same thing. Swear the guy thinks he is an english professor. I suppose he seems to know very little about fish so he has a go at us about punctuation. :D
don't just want to breed good fish I want to breed WOW fish.

FISHKEEPING IS MORE THAN A HOBBY IT IS A DISEASE MAN!!

I guess it could be argued that you are going to spend a certain amount of money on the hobby anyway.

so if you are getting some money out of it from fry etc, that money you are making can be seen as profit, because the money you are investing in the hobby is being spent on enjoyment etc. It's difficult to explain what I am trying to say. Let me use an analogy:

Say you drive from brisbane to perth, you buy a car, buy some petrol and off you go. All up  food, petrol, the cost of the car and a new radiator belt from some servo in Longreach costs $10,000.

If you get someone who also needs to go to Perth to split the fuel bill with you, then you might "make" or "save" (depending on how you look at it) a few hundred dollars. sure having that extra weight in the car uses a bit more fuel, but you are still getting to Perth for cheaper.

In the same way, breeding or selling a few fish is like picking up that passenger, you spend a bit extra on food and chems, but you make a bit of money back.

It also gives a bit of purpose your hobby, and expands the hobby from merely having a pretty glass box to really getting into the life cycle of fish.

Just musing I guess... I agree though that if you ever asked an account to do the sums, you would always come out in the red for a small setup.

Some real "cash cows" (cash fish?!) would be discus. perennially expensive fish due to their finnicky nature.

I made a bit of money breeding some eureka red peacocks which I sold for 3.50 each to a local fish shop at 2-3cm.

There is a very long thread about the trials and tribulations of the hobbyist fish breeder. It talks about the fluctuations in price of the albino bristlenose. good for a read.

anyway, good luck with your endeavors and I hope those fish start breeding for you soon. let me know when you have some albinos for sale!!

Paul.

Do you like natives?

someone is right...you have to like what you are breeding and then just maybe you'll get lucky enough to make some dollars for further expansion ect.

If you like natives I'd really recommend Desert Gobies and Peacock Gudgeons.
Both very easy to bred and best of all sell.
Shops/Wholesalers can't get enough of them and thats the truth. You'll sell all you produce for $4 or $5 ea and for some reason very few people breed either of them so no overload on the market.
Also both are small and require little room so good for small setup.

Good luck,
Linda
