RED DEVIL ISSUES

I have two red devils in my  five foot tank with egg crate dividing them... I have a problem though. The smaller one keeps digging under the egg crate and is getting hammered by the big fella... She wont stop doing it and is getting worse looking every time... keep finding her nailed to the bottom of the tank but if it was me i''d stop doing it. She digs down and because the airstone is in the water i cant get the egg crate right to the bootom of the tank.
