Hi All,
did anyone watch the "New inventers" on ABC last night, just before the glasshouse?

Well, there was an inventor in the finalist that invented a water purifier to get clean drinking water from dirty water throught the process of evaporation.  It is a sealed box that has dirty water running through it and as the sun heats it, some evaporation will come out and drain down into the clean drinking water.  The other thing it does is kills the bacteria in the box cos the UV from the sun acts just like a UV in our systems.

This got me thinking ( and no it did ot hurt).  If I recylce my household waste like laundry, sink and shower waste into a 1000ltr drum, connect a pump to pump the water through the water extracting device, and top up the sump with the clean water.  It will produce about 3 ltrs a day from a surface area of about .3m

I'm seriously going to get this thing up and running once I have my own place.  No need to buy more water but instead just re-use the water that you have already paid for.

What do ya reckon?

Dan,

Are you going to give up building great sumps and build these units?

No Barry,
These solar water purifiers is a secondary part of a good system cos it will provide the topup water to the sump without costing you more money.

Hmmm, interesting (gee they have some great shows on ABC sometimes). How far along was the inventor with his idea? Was it patented and all that?

The inventor has already got it into production.  Rotary  is now distributing it to third world countries like Africa.  So it definitely works.

Only problem is that it only does 3 or so litres cos it's only .3 sq mtrs.  So I'm thinking of building a big one about 1 mtr high and about 10 meters long.  Attach it to the side of the deck and I'm sure it can make about 20-40 litres a day.  That's more than enough for top up water per day.

Cheers,

you could also run the water through some polly to increase rise in temp there for fast evaperation. this then should require a less evaperation area.
