And i suppose these shops do not have to turn a profit? They do not pay for electricity?? They do not have to pay rent? they do not to pay insurance premiums?? GST TAX STAFF etc, god forbid a business trying to turn a dollar, also some businesses are tied to certain arrangements and or supplier contracts so again god help them for trying to make a living! It is alot harder in the outer regions freight costs are involved, stock turns are needed to run a business etc etc. But hell yeah, lets go wipe em off for trying to make a living??? yes i am shocked as i drink my $5 coffee, and eat my gourmet pizza,,,,,hmmmmm i wonder if imake them myself i am sure i could do it cheaper!!!!!!!!!

dear little fish yes but the same price is all over really - but there are cheaper sorts of fish if you dont wanna pay the price  -- as a breeder of this fish i can tell you your not getting ripped off as like the other fellow says we all got electricity - feeding & so on ,,so buy yourself some guppies for $2.99 yellow strain ones would be the go .

Interesting how Elec Yellows are usually the pricey ones. LFS I saw the other day had them $17.95 @ 3cm and not exactly the most electric yellow colour I've ever seen.

Let's be honest here - the average price E.Yellows go for on this forum and at the auctions is ~$5.00 each for 4-5cm ones, and usually that's for reasonable quality.
So that sure is a big markup (200-300%) by the time they hit the store.

Sure they gotta make a living, but I think pricing policy is also to do with hot-seller popularity and the fact little kiddies say "buy me the yellow ones mummy!"

If stores can sell them at those prices than good luck to them!
Unfortunately it means enthusiasts in provincial cities or towns are bent over a barrel. But also means some customers are pushed into finding a way to get their fish from elsewhere.

So begs the question: is it always good business sense long term???
If someone living in Proserpine gets his E.Yellow home and it dies a week or two later, are they necessarily going to run back down to the LFS to outlay another $30? Probably not, and maybe even give up the hobby as it's too expensive.
So is the local business doing any favours for themselves and the hobby locally in this case? :?

If you live in a small location and can find other local enthusiasts, my advice is make a consolidated order with a breeder on this forum that will freight.

I do believe he said they were available from local breeders which would miimise freight.

There is a difference between been profitable and profiteering.

Seems like a rip off IMO.

ill have to go with raycam on this    yes to us the prices seem too high   but we dont have to make a living out of it and pay for dead stock. Ive always had an opinion that if you like it and want it youll pay for it. I have purchased stock form lfs  when i could not find on this forum or if i really liked their stock   . So buyer beware and fish keepers  dont judge the shop too harshly and if you think its too dear just go else where

My two cents   peter

hi

well if the shop sold the yellows for $9.50 like us.

but then only offered the breder $2.50 like us

you would then think the breder was getin riped off

what is the best...

I was under the impression that a 400% mark up on live stock was about the norm in the Aquarium industry.
Maybe the shop owner wont deal with local breeders because they sell their fry below the wholesale price, and then turn around and sell to all the other hobbiest at the same price. Then the store, who would have taken a larger quanties more often, is stuck with fish that they can move because you burnt them on the deal.
Maybe they wont deal with breeders because a few people in this hobby seem to think its OK to bash the stores for trying to make a dollar.

debates ya gotta love em, I was watching the other post on red fronnies and everyone is giving Kev shit about selling em, but ya know what he wouldnt be seeling em iffen no one wanted them!! juss like these yellows if they are overpriced dont buy em easy as that, supply demand will let the shop know in a hurry if its a bad deal, there are so many variables as to why some things are priced the way they are!!!! Stewart hit the nail right on the head with his comments, spot on! I think Stewart is a smart little cookie!!
Rusty "I do believe he said they were available from local breeders which would miimise freight". again so many variables on this also, how many can the breeder supply? how often can he supply? can he keep up with supply? etc etc
GTR you are right in a couple of things you say also, maybe there is a higher gp markup in the yellows and may be priced higher to due stock turnover, thus allowing to make up on a shortfall or compensate for a short fall in gp on equipment sales or other stock?? How much return per floor space do you think this shop has?? again if we want to get into a full on business debate, drag out the P&L's on your business's for the last few years and we will go over them, depreciation is another killer for a business etc etc, i wanna coffee cause i am tired and wanna go to bed,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Love you all,,,,especially you Pete

Well thats ok
ausie Pets at Lawnton is selling
E/ blues for $26 each and e/yellows for $23 each
Rip off I think so
But i gess we are spoiled on here getting them for around a $ a cm
So If I was you i would find some 1 on here buy them cheep
Even with shipping i gess you could make a few $$ selling them to the people up there

My 2 cents

he foot steps in the sands of time arn't made by sitting on your ass

Dead Fish Floating

Ok if that fish cost the shop $1, then to sell it for $3.30 covers deaths, feed and hopefully wages.
No petshop sells more cichlids than community fish and yet people will usually focus on the few expensive fish.
I made a lot more money breeding and selling guppys than cichlids!!!
Sure $5 for a sellable size yellow is a decent price from a breeder.
$15 to $22 at a lfs is always gonna be the result of that.
Oh and people want them.
supply and demand.
Personally I'd rather Barlowii but thats the deal.
Unless you want the fish it's price doesn't matter.
I hardly bat an eyelid seeing $100+ fronnys
But a $20 Mollie makes me seeth......

A fish is only worth what your willing to pay.
And money is only worth something if 'you' believe it is.
Otherwise it's just a bit of metal or plastic
that offers you the vague chance to take it too a bank and try hand it in for gold.

Breed, buy and sell the fish you like,
if you think they are worth it, say so.
Nothing wrong with taking pride in your bubs and asking for more.
But remember....  profit wise....
My buckets of guppys or whiteclouds
can crush your african breeder tanks.
Even rosey barbs/danios etc pay their way.

yellows and blues get people into Africans.
Be happy they hold their price.
Otherwise breeders would use them for feeders
and move over to breeding tiger barbs and gourami
Muhahahahahahahahaha!!
