I wouldn't reccomend using Blood worms at all.  8O
They are found in the mud of stagnent pools & feed from the mud, including when this contains chenicals which are toxic to some fishes. This is where the blood worms that you "buy" come from.
Also red mosquito larvae induce allergic reactions in about 30% of persons coming into contact with them(Liebers,1991).I have seen rashes on people caused by Blood worms.
Then again I know people who use bloodworms with no problems.

There are plenty of other foods on the market that are better for your fish.
Frozen foods like brine, mysis, cichlid dinner are better.

Any of the name brand flakes(cichlid or tropical) will be good too.

I feed my pairs of Severums frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. For flake I feed them a mixture of different Sera flake products. I also feed them protein pellets as well. I'll be getting a worm farm soon as well as they supposedly love worms. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.

what is the name of the protein pellet you feed your severums. can you help me try to identify males and females, I have 2 gold and 2 green ones. I green one has gold and blues squiggles on his face, with orange on his belly and fins and the other one has light blus colour on his both lip down to his throat. can you say what sex they are.

thanks lee

Lee,
The protein pellets are from Phil, Sigmaphile. I've got various sizes from fry powder through to about 5mm dependant on the fish. I rate it highly as tyhe fish love it and I've gotten some really good growth out of my fry.

As for sexing Severums. The most common trait in both Gold and Green varieties is the "war paint" the males have on their faces. That being really pronounced dark squiggles over the face where the female may have some but will be pretty faint. Thats the easiest way to sex them from what I've been told and I've never really looked into doing it any other way. Maybe someone else knows other ways other than observing them spawn and watching the frickin males eat the eggs and young fry that is. If you can post up a photo of them and I'll give it a shot at sexing them for you. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bryce.
