hey,
i never used to have much trouble with my bn fry, but lately i've been losing whole batches when they're a couple of weeks old.
I had 2 batches about 2 weeks old (approx 70) and i cleaned the tank sponge filter yesterday (in tank water in a bucket) and today every single one was dead.

I've lost my last few batches, not in the same way as this lot, but I'm wondering what's going wrong.

It's been a while now since I've actually bothered with them but now they're breeding well again I am keen to actually get a good amount grown up.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I couple of months ago i lost an entire batch of fry as well. I only do minor water changes but don't use a chlorine neutraliser. I have never had problems this way with losing fish. I assumed in my case though that there was a very low level of overall chlorine in tank that killed the fry, but all other fish were able to tolerate it. They all died within 4 hours of the water change.

If you are in the drought areas including brisbane and the coasts then the water is the problem. The council has added double chlorine and chloramine into the water due to the bacteria etc.

You need to double your chlorine dosage and see what happens. I also use products like Cycle, Stress Coat/Zyme etc. I find that these products also seem to help when the water is bad. I use whatever I ended up buying on special. If you have the money you can buy distilled water if the tank is fairly small and add half distilled water/ half tap water. The distilled water is fairly pure of chemicals and very soft.

Anyway let me know how you go. I cant seem to stop mine from breeding at present. Good success rate with about 150 in each batch so I must be doing something right or just having good luck.

ok, the tank is a 2x2x18 bare bottom, only fish in there are 3 lg male bn 4 female bn.

The babies died after I just lightly cleaned the filter sponge. (This was done in a bucket with a couple of litres of water that came from the tank)
I didn't do a water change until after I found them dead.

It's strange, and a bit annoying as they just started to breed well again

Anyway thanks for the help.

Hmmm very interesting

I used to live at Beerwah and the exact same thing happened to me in total I lost nearly 500 fry at the 2 week old stage, no water change, no other fish in the tank bar the fry, fed the same as always, I am hoping things are different now I have moved???

would love to know the reason!!!

Alan Caboolture

For the two years 1980/1981 I kept close records of bristle nose breeding behaviour.  At this point I had kept B.N. since 1968, but my first ever spawn was in 1971.

My first ever spawn produced 7 young bristles, occured in a 5'x18"x18" planted tank, under a flat rock.    Working totally in the dark in those days, no one was telling anyone anything if they managed to breed anything.   NO internet, no forums, and bugger all info at the clubs.

Females spawned every 36 to 45 days, depended on the individual, but 40 days was the average for the 14 breeding females I was recording..

I didn't count eggs, but counted fry 4 weeks from free swimming.  Minimum was 27, maximum we 72 (bloody strange that).

The average spawn survival over 272 spawns for two years was 48 babies.

Alan.

:?: what the hell is the significance of '2' and '7' with bristle nose ????? :?

P.S.  I haven't changed anything in my fish keeping but the results of late do not add up !!!!!.....The only thing I can put it down to is the water supply.
