All,

Im after some tips for shipping fish - no doubt some of you out there do this quite often - hopefully with the fish arriving alive and happy.

Im trying to work out how to get some fish to Mackay; any ideas? Experience with airlines? Any legal requirements?

Contact Virgin Freight for flight info.
Must use airline approved box (it has a plane stamped into the lid}
Be lined with a plastic liner and newspaper on bottom and then taped      at least twice completely around the box and then around the lid.
They will help you out at the freight terminal.
Also ring and pre book the box and use oxygen in bags if posssible.
Is only hour and half flight but must be at airport 1 hr defore departure and you can't be sure when they will be picked up.

I reckon Australian Air Express would be a better bet, Virgin would have to be the most unprofessional people I've ever seen.

with my experience with AAE mate i'd go virgin and its probably cheaper then AAE

Have found AAE a lot more expensive and the only stuffup we've had with air transport was with AAE.
On that occasion the fish flew AAE into Sydney and then had to be connected to another flight. Because the order wasn't 500kg in weight they said it had no priority for the next connecting flight and may have had to sit at terminal a day or more before it was loaded onto the connecting flight. Not good with livestock of any description.

hi Linda,at least i'm not the only one that has had boxes of fish lieing around on the tarmac with AAE especially in brisbane.they have to be the worst i think.

Sorry to hear no good with AAE, my fish came from rocky to Bris no worries, arrived when stated.  But not surprised to hear bad experiences as well cause we use them for work, plenty used to them.
But there is a courier company that will take the fish on the road, will find out who.
Good to know virgin will do it now as well.

Just make sure there aren't too many fish per bag, make sure the bags can't move in the box, spare bags full of air worked well with mine, purge the fish, extremely important for longer than expected trips. oxygen!

I'd suspect the AAE thing was probably due to a lot of frieght at the time but still not good with anyform of live thing or frozen or come to think of it anything at all if you havn't been warned prior to putting it in their hands.
Havn't had any problems with Virgin at all.

Hi guys, haven't had any experience with fish & AAE but have had some Australian parrots go missing twice, was told it was an honest mistake but wasn't so sure, when further questions were asked found out they were going to be stolen !!!    just happened that the guy doing the loading was into parrots as well & thought he needed them more than my mate at the other end  8O  8O . The guy no longer works at AAE but the trust is gone, If I need to send any more Parrots I now take them myself & meet my mate half way,of coarse this wouldn't work if my mate lived inW.A.
Just my 2 cents worth.

i just got quoted a price from AAE for fish  from taree (spelling) ,just out side of sydney,up to gladstone, $46 consigment price ,plus $26 kg on top of that.so i told the bloke to go and jump .never been quoted a price that silly before .but if you ask a different person on prices , they will tell you a different one. goes to show if they cant settle on one price how well do they look after the freight ,being live /dead/ or just baggage

Yeah well, I've just had a hassel with AAE too,and all of a sudden they want to charge by volume, if the weight isnt enough,  looks like they are all the same.
This freighting fish isnt as much fun as it used to be.
