I have been looking at information on the internet. no-one has a straight answer! Does anyone know or have any themselves? I have a few I have collected, both males & females. I also have regular jacks.

i dont think they are hybrids but im no expert. i was told that they were just a variant of the normal JDs.
thats what this site says anyway http://www.tropicalresources.net/phpBB2/fish_profiles_octofaciatus_blue.php

[quote:409977f96b]One of these falsehoods is the belief that this fish is a hybrid which is not true. Electric Blue Dempseys are a natural occurring variant of the Jack Dempsey, a popular aquarium fish from Central America. The fact is that the variant was not recognized and developed until recent years after being accidently discovered in an aquarium by Hector Luzardo. It is thought that the species was missed previously due to early breeders of Jack Dempseys considered the smaller "blueish" fry to be runts and were generally culled from their spawns.[/quote:409977f96b]

either way theyre an absolutely beutifull fish!

Thanks for your replies, I have read that theory about small (runts) of the batch. I have bred fish for years(including reg jack dempsey), the runts end up being mong fish(abnormal). I have never come across a beautiful runt, in any of my tanks. So therefore, I find it hard to believe!
I hear a guy in the states has 30 pairs, I will keep looking for info & keep you all posted.
