I have been watching my Linni absolutely destroy the indroduced snail populations in one of my tanks! I hate snails with a vengance, and unfortunately when buying some fish recently (Shellies) they came with shells, but also snails, so threw em into my linni tank until there little tank was ready!!!! after smaking myself around the head a few times for doing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have happily watched my Linni eat every snail that pops its head out, these are really hard shelled little critters, but the Linni suck em up and out then spit out the empty shells
God love em
Just thought i would share this little story...

Clown Loaches make short work of snails also. Especially those little black "trumpet" snails.

I put Pakistani loaches in my angel and gourami tanks - and they "licked 'em clean" of snails.
However, since introducing some plants to my colony of Tropheus Moorii Moliro - it is now over-run with the little b's.
Does anyone have an opinion as to whether I could put Pakistani loaches in with my breeding moliros???

ditto my tandanus cat, he loves all the snails he can get hold of.

What is it about snails that you hate so much?

GTR73

I think most people are talking about those little black trumpet snails, which are a menace to any aquarium.
One snail can spawn dozens of offspring in one hit, so not only do they make it look unsightly by nearly over-running it in short time, they potentially clog up filters, plumbing etc. They essentially produce an infestation of your tank if left unchecked.
Nasty little things.  :?

Ulysses048

Yes - I agree - they do look very unsightly - and they breed prolificly - even moreso than convicts - would you believe??
I call them cone snails - and in the morning when I go to feed my Tropheus the tank is covered in them.
They do clog up the filters and the gravel siphon when vacuuming or cleaning the tank.
Please someone tell me it is OK ato put my Pakistani loaches in with the tropheus to be rid of these pests !!!

as stated they are dreadful in filters, annoying when breeding little shellies as they can damage spawning sites etc, iffen i could up the ol double barrel and open up on em without destroying the tank i woulds       i have some lovely big mystery snails sliding around can handle those, but not them little suckers,,,,,,,,,,,,

when is my next SA meeting (Snail Anonymous) feeeling alittle dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how do u even get the snaels in the first place.....by fish, plants, cos i have no idea how they came to be in my tank

I think they come in with the plants, substrate or whatever - and every time you use the same net, vacuum, or whatever, you transfer the snails from one tank to another.
Another interesting point I thought of in this scenario is - I wonder if the snail shells change the pH of the water - are they like seashells and raise the pH which would not be so bad in an African tank - but bet my angels would not like it!!!
Regards

GTR73

I really can't comment on Pakistani Loaches from experience, but I know you can introduce both Clown Loaches and Siamese Algae Eaters into an African tank no probs. Both species are naturally from a softer water environment, but a nice slow intro to harder water over a few days gets them settled nicely. And lots of people have them with Africans, as we all know   .
Plus if Paki loaches are as assertive as Clown loaches I'm guessing they'll handle the Tropheus no worries.

I don't think it'd be a problem in my opinion.

GTR73

Actually those Pakistani Loaches are cool looking fish:

Anyone breeding these in brisbane?

hareysfish

also .not to sure if people are aware of it but snail eggs come out of your tape water as well as plants and substrait.
