Krumpet

hey team.

I'm in a predicament. My comunity tank has had white spot for about 3 weeks and i have only been able to treat it (with Aqua Master rapid white spot treatment) in half doses because of some of the tanks occupants (Plecostumas, bristlenose, tetras etc) and i have since aquired some very expensive fish, (rare geophagus) and had no choice but to put them into this tank, and of course they now have whitespot. I really don't want them to die (and neither should you as i will declare war on the world if they do, and that affects you!) So my question is, should i take all the fish out accept the geophagus and do a full dose or is there a better product or approach i should use/take. ANY help would be appreciated.

Regards

THEYRE ALL DEAD

They were on the road to recovery when 4 nights later my D*&%head drunk mate tipped half a container of food in the tank and then passed out spilling the rest on the floor...

I got home late the next afternoon and as you can imagine, it got physical. Not only the geophagus, but the whole tank bar two cory's.......DEAD!!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think when u have something bad in a tank, never put in more fish, especially rare fish  . In your case u had no other room, but i think it would be a whole lot easier and cheaper to go down to the hardware store and buy a big plastic tub for $5 and use that while u treat the bad tank.

Anyway i hope u dont loose any fish :(

1 table spoon of salt per 20 litres.

maybe try a different brand of white spot medication.

I haven't had white spot for ages but i found the Aqua Master medications pretty good, even at half dose, it worked in about 3 days, i did get it early though.

also do a google search on ich/whitespot treatment.

yep, thats what id do,
add about 1/4 cup salt (non iodised) disolve first in water,
crank the temp up slowly to 29-30 and keep there till white spots dissaprear and then another 3 days,
took 10 days last time i had to do it

make sure you have plenty of surface water movement as oxygen levels drop in warmer water.

i f you use the salt and temp method, you wont need the meds,,
i suggest one or the other.
if you using meds now,, do a 50% water change then add the salt and start the temp increase, you wont need the meds after that.

ashhhh

:!: remember half dosage on the salt coz you have cattys and they dont like too much salt :!:
Cheers.....

cranking the temp just speeds up the life cycle

you will need to teat every 3 days  for 12 days after you do a huge 50% or bigger water change after each 3 day treatment, i did a 80%water change.

salt is a good treatment but only if the tank mates can handle it, mine could not,

geta good white spot treatment i used the green stuff melachite green, fromaldahyde, achriflavin stuff. worked a treat, ichaway is also very good and more concentrated.

I would chuck a portable UV on the tank aswell, fix it up, and stop it ever happening again.

here fishie fishie

Use a gravel vac on the water changes.
If increasing the temp, increase the airation.
Use the meds, & must be used for 10 days or at least use the medicine one more time fter the spots disappear.
Read the cichlid forum article that gasnitro placed up for ya.

DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NOT DONE THIS MYSELF

There is a viralent strain of white spot around that seems to have affected a few people.  I have heard people say bugger the directions, do a full dose every day for three days in a row, then do a big water change and repeat.  Lower the temperature while doing this.

Supposedly this viralent stage is so viralent that raising the temperature just gives it the chance to win - as speeds up the cycle, whereas lowering kills the bugger.

I would say this goes against everything I believe about white spot except I have seen the viralaent stage at a pet shop and in my tanks.  Normal dosage does not knock it out.

DISCLAIMER I  HAVE NEVER TRIED THE ABOVE

I reckon given the list of fish you have given I would say bugger it and do a full dose and see what happens.
