hey,<
>i have noticed quite a few people on here selling
istlenose in big bulk lots.<
>Now the main thing i wanted to ask is, what method do you use to get the best recovery of fry and how do you grow them up?<
><
>for example, how many pairs do you have?<
>:do you grow your fry up in the
eeder tank?<
>:if not, how do you move them etc?<
>you get the idea.<
><
>don''t get me wrong, i''ve
ed
istlenose over and over no probs, but my pairs aren''t all that big (8-11cm tops) and don''t produce huge spawns.<
>I am looking at soon aquiring more large pairs, and wondered how you all managed getting the most from them.<
><
>do you use a lot of tanks or just the same ones over again.<
><
>sorry if it''s all confusing but ya get the idea.<
>thanks Steven & Amy<

Hi Amy & Steeve,<
> I have 2 x males at 13cm and 2 x females at 13cm, i keep them in a 4fter with my fireblues (1m/4f/m) KEEP IN MIND!!!!! i have lost fish before due to them being long and short in hight, they would enter the b/n logs and then the male b/n would block the entrance, killing the fish........my fireblues are high in the body and dont enter the logs. any way. i keep a log for each male b/n and no more than that, this keeps them limited to 1 log(perminent residance) i feed them BULK spirolena pellets until they are fat and healthy and then i keep checking the logs. usually when you see a male fanning his log with all his effort then thats usually a good sign as they will lay soon. keep checking the logs until you find eggs layed. once i have noticed the eggs i give them around 7-8days and check for wrigglers. once i have wrigglers, i put a fry net in the tank(same tank as not to change the condition causing shock), at the other end of the tank, from the filter. this way they get enough current to keep the water in the net fresh. i also cover the bottom of the net with a piece of slate so that the slack is taken out of the net and the fry have a secure resting place from curious picking fish. also a little piece of drift wood. i usually put an ice cream lid over the top of the net to keep it dark, like in the log. i leave the male in the log-picking it up full of water i then pour it into the net-removing the fry(be careful when refilling the log,i hold the open end up at a slight angle so the water can slowly run into the log without over filling throwing the fry into the main tank), this takes a couple of pours/until no more fry come out.(a few reamain in the log, it doesnt matter) i dont feed the fry until the egg sacks have gone from the fry''s bellies and then i use a morter and pissle to pulp some spiro pellets and feed that to them until they are big enough to eat from a pellet (5mm). and then that is when i move them to my 3fter b/n fry tank to grow to 3-4cm and then i distribute them threw out my tanks, 4''s and 5fter. i have been told to have a
eeding ratio of 2-3m to1 f/m, but i would rather it the other way as my f/m''s bothe lay at the same time and in the same log with the same male. this may vary for others.... but yeah thats how it works for me, i am getting fry from my pairs at around every 3-4 week without fail. gravel is 30% CC and 70% normal gravel. temp is at 26''c and i have drift wood in the 4ft tank. i water change 30% every week and vacume the gravel.....HTH. any more q''s or you want to drop in and have a yarn and look at my set ups then you can e-mail me at michaelharrold@msn.com<

><
>just wondering what size tank you all use for growinf up fry?<

I use a 3fter to get them from 1cm to 3cm-4cm and then i move like 30/50 each into my 4/5fters to grow from there until sale.HTH.<

Hi,<
><
>Any one who has been following the  Australian catfish forums over the last 4 or 5 years will have seen this question asked and answered many times.<
><
>Any one who is really keen can
owse back throught the thousands of
istle nose posts on the three major Australian catfish forums, and find that every possible question has been answered.<
><
>A lot has changed in the past thirtyfive odd years and we have tried to keep everyone informed.   In 1968 my first two one inch (2.5cm)
istle nose cost me a week''s wages each, and no one was giving out any information at all.<
><
>These days with the net, information (correct or not) is flashed around the world in seconds, and
istle nose are only worth $1 ea @ 3cm SL. to
eeders.<
><
>My advise is, check all the old posts (even the archives) on this forum and the two other catfish forums.<
