hey all,
in my colony of hongi at the moment i have 4 males 6 females,
i was thinking of ditching 2 males, possibly a third.

how do you think they'd go with just the 1 male?

hey steve,

i think that it would be best to keep at least 2 males, due to some females may not breed with that 1 male.so,putting 2 males in together with the females ensures that they will breed.

Cheers tim.

yes i think one male might get a little complacent if you had 2 or 3 it will keep the dom male on his toes.......well fins!!!

definately keep 2, and keep the dominant 2, that way they take their anger out on each other and not the females. one by himself would become a wife beater.
woman is more like a beer...They look good...They smell good...And you'd step over your own mother just to get one!!

yeh it's pretty easy to spot the dominant male, he's always brightly coloured and flared up. i had a feeling some competition would keep him on top of his game.
i was thinking of keeping 2, just pondered the thought of just 1.
cheers for the feedback.

That brightly coloured, flared up, dominant male wont stay that way  365 days,,,,,, year in year out.

Keep a couple of reserves to come in off the bench.

An old friend of mine had the right idea.

Only one fish tank in the house !    A fair lump of a tank nicely seascaped, with all the spare males from his fish room. (No femalles at all)... NOW that was a tank worth looking at !!!!     Every fish in the tank in full dress but no fights.

NICE !!!!!

Its always best to keep 1 male to 2 or 3 females
Most people make the mistake of just leting the dom male run the show
But some of the time he doesn't have the best coluring
So you could take out the dom male and see if the other guy looks better
when all colured up
Just a thought
Good luck

yeh i did that,
the dom male has beautiful colour, and the others seem pale in comparison, but when i separate them they're all nice.
