[quote:c83c3ba8d2="mjscookie"]Why should people be intimidated to ask questions? You know what the problem is - generally the male alter-ego-internet persona. We act tough on here, and everytime someone says something it's an attack at us ![/quote:c83c3ba8d2]

You got that right. :D  But some of us prefer to just be ourselves as we have nothing to prove and everything to learn.

[quote:c83c3ba8d2="mjscookie"]If people are willing to provide a detailed post regarding whats wrong, whats happened lately, and what they think the problem is, they won't get replys with simple questions.[/quote:c83c3ba8d2]

That is what we should be encouraging, I agree.  If the experienced people here provide in depth information from their experiences, then new people are going to see that it is ok to put up a long-winded explanation of what is going wrong, whats happened lately etc.  This would therefore stimulate reasonable responses as you are suggesting.

[quote:c83c3ba8d2="mjscookie"]As the title of this post goes, "Manners and Ettiqute". I don't waste my day thinking and using my time and $$$ to reply to something and [b:c83c3ba8d2]then get hounded as if I was having a go[/b:c83c3ba8d2]. I would much prefer to have sleep.[/quote:c83c3ba8d2]

I hope that wasn't directed at me, as I haven't been hounding you at all.  I am just joining in what is a healthy debate and putting forward my thoughts.  I agree with some of your points for sure, but I have some points as well.  But that is all part of the fun of creating an interesting thread

[quote:2b732669ad="mjscookie"]BTW - Theo - you need a special award. I think the last post you started here went for this long (water aging in barrells LOL).
Mitch[/quote:2b732669ad]

I second that and this reinforces what you are aiming for Mitch.  Experienced people like Theo stimulating beneficial and interesting debates  :D

DeagonTheo

All I can say is that, if one of my posts can lure Doug(DFishkkeeper) out to make a comment then my work here is nearly done.

I also find it very hard to believe that Doug could get banned from anywhere, if he can get banned, than even the Pope would be in trouble.

An award would be nice, (Joking) but what I am glad to see is, that so many people have read this thread and made their own comments, and by doing so we can all relate to some of the incidents that happen from time to time on the forum.

Hopefully some people will learn that there is a certain way to behave  on the forum, just as in life, and if so, then this post will have done its job.

Well put Theo.

I guess that what it comes down to is people acting towards other forum members with the same respect and courtesy they would expect in return.  This is something that no amount of moderating can control.

GTR73

Yeah I was amazed to see Doug got banned at a site, that is until I saw which site it was.  :?

On moderating, I personally think QLDCichlid forum has just the right medium - not too heavy handed so everyone can have a say, but at the same time any blatant rudeness to one another is firmly shut down.

I've had posts deleted off that site Doug got banned from, simply for expressing an opinion on their rules (the one requiring a certain number of posts over a certain period time or get yourself de-registered - thank God this site doesn't have that!).

On the other hand I've visited other forums (a Home Theatre discussion forum in particular), where there's little moderation at all. So there's pleny of abuse hurled between participants, usually because of a simple disagreement in opinion, and even threats of bodily harm to a one another! Ruthless sites like this demonstrate to me how easily things get outta control with out some level of policing.

Discussion on net forums is done largely anonymously, which encourages an open dialogue for better or for worse, so it's a fine line for moderators to tread in order to keep their forum successful.
QLDCichlid's been around for a few years now, so I would say the mods doing a good job speaks for itself and don't change a thing. Sure there's some deals that go sour or people get stung, but I don't think mods can or should have to police that (unless it's blatant behaviour of course).

Good on Theo for stirring up a lively discussion - first one in a long while! :D

Finally I know which site you all are talking about

I agreed as I personally read more than making post   some people seem to use the "fish" forum as a chit chat forum to boost their post count

I was agreeing with you Multey, just giving other reasons why people don't post.

I agree that for Doug to get banned form somewhere is unbelievable, he's such a nice bloke.

Multey my answer to the big bucks question was [quote:8b892886b7]Maybe look at fish shops from a different point of view. I save alot more money by dealing solely with shops [/quote:8b892886b7] Your answer was [quote:8b892886b7]Because I have seen first hand the differences in prices at a fair range of shops and compared prices to forum prices. [/quote:8b892886b7]

Now I will explain what I do. This is also helpful for those bitter at dealing privately.
A hobbyist never makes money, mostly. So how can I "save"?
Dry goods is my biggest expense, by selling fish to shops for the same price I get here, gets me credit. Because I have a good repour with a shop or 2 & we work on a 2 way street, I don't pay retail. Whenever something good {livestock} comes in, I get a great deal as the owner will know that when I breed the fish he gets the young at a good price, easier for him to re sell, once again my credit stays good. Then again I could be just lucky. But I know I am not, as I know of a few others that do this too.

For me I don't breed shitloads either so this in practice works well. I don't have to worry about selling privately.

ps;Yes I have some privately bought live stock, wouldn't even be 20%.

pps; Theo you shit stirring bastard,{jok} good on ya, keep up the good work

Mate, I am lucky enough to have an arrangement just like yours.  I have hardly paid for any supplies or accessories for a long time  :D  Its a good thing if you can get it.

Cheers

Hey Guys,

I must admit I was a bit shocked myself. Not only did I get banned, I even got an email today warning me that screen shots are being taken of my posts on QCF criticising that other forum  8O

Oh well, at least I know now what I only suspected earlier

Cheers, Doug

Wow. This other forum must be very stupid. You don't think the sydney-siders look at this forum.

i cant believe that! you havent even said anything bad.. sounds like theyre a bit paranoid and they are taking it way too far! all you tried to do was help out a qld based member find some fish on a forum where there isnt alot of qld members who post fish for sale. i also mentioned the auction and had my post deleted   i wonder if beefa has found this site yet?..

Who cares :?: We are talking about the truth here. No attacks on anyone, seems like it has been cases of helping someone out. Maybe they feel that advising an Auction in Qld is a clash of interest with the Auction in Sydney.  8O
When we had the yellow dicussion, I even told a moderator I am posting my views up here. They were welcome to reply. At least here I knew the posts weren't going to get edited or deleted. Well ok, one sent our mod a message & the post was locked.
